DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are hinting that they will take a conservative approach to this week’s trade deadline. Scott Harris said they will be looking for players who will help them now and in the future.
Trading for Eugenio Suarez does not appear to be a possibility given his 2-month rental and inability to play any position other than 3B. Adding him would disrupt A. J. Hinch’s strategy as well as limit the play time for other players.
This means that they don’t intend on mortgaging the future by trading away top prospects. Prospects that would be required by other teams in order to part with a top level player. A good number of those higher-profile players would be 2-month rentals.
Instead, it is believed that Scott Harris will be targeting mid-level players with relievers as a top priority.

They are also thinking that a number of players returning from the IL (including Kerry Carpenter) and the promotion of some young pitchers will help boost their performance and chances of playing in October. Last year, the Tigers promoted 3 young pitchers who helped them get to the playoffs.
The promotion of Hao-Yu Lee, who is a RHH, is also expected.

What do you think of the Tigers’ strategy of improving their performance with a combo of returning IL players and the promotion of multiple pitchers and a hitter or two while retaining their best talent in the minors?
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Which strategy should the Tigers use when it comes to trading for players this week?

1. Retain and promote the best minor league talent while acquiring a key mid-level player(s).

2. They need to make a bigger splash in the trade market and use some of their better prospects to get it.

To make room for both Skubal and Jackson on the active roster, RHP Keider Montero was optioned to Triple-A Toledo and RHP Geoff Hartlieb was designated for assignment following last night’s game.

I voted to just add a few mid level players. Don't mortgage the future.

The problem with that is, in my opinion, your window is now. You have to either load up this year and next or trade skubal now. Because if we sign him long term, there is zero chance we sign anyone else for a long while.

Make Clark and McGonigle off limits. You can still make any trade happen with the rest of our prospects

They could trade some of their prospects now to make a run, then this off season, trade Skubal to replace what they lost. I don't think there is a chance in hell that they can sign him before he becomes a free agent.
