Totally Tigers
The Detroit Tigers’ owner Chris Ilitch and PoBO Scott Harris have stated that they want to develop a sustainable organization that has a constant flow of young talent coming up.
Contrast that with former GM Dave Dombrowski who routinely depleted the farm system in order to add higher-profile players.
Is it possible for the Tigers to develop an entirely home-grown roster?
Other than the reigning Cy Young Award winner, the Tigers have a roster consisting of mostly solid but not overly remarkable players. There are no players classified as being elite. In a recent survey, baseball fans outside of Michigan are hard-pressed to name a Detroit Tiger player not named Skubal.
We know the team is focused on making the playoffs. But is this roster-building strategy capable of taking a team all the way to the end of October?
Would they have enough talent to get it done?
Or do they need something more? Do they need to add an elite player or two to the mix either via free agency or a trade in order to increase their chances of getting those rings?
If the latter, it would come as a cost. Either losing developmental talent that might disrupt that pipeline flow or putting a significant amount of payroll into 1 or 2 players while risking the ability to extend promising players in Detroit.

At some point, do the Tigers need to add an elite-level player from outside the organization to the roster in order to get to the World Series?

1. Yes.
2. Not necessarily. They could do it with an overall solid roster.
