SATURDAY SURVEY.

First it was “pitching chaos.” Now the Detroit Tigers have created “reliever roulette.”
All because their bullpen now ranks as one of MLB’s worst. Since mid-May, their ERA is 4.61.
They have brought on Kyle Finnegan who has worked out very well so far. But he’s not enough. Will Vest right now is the only other dependable reliever.
So now they’ve gotten creative and I noticed something different on the Tigers’ daily transaction list. They were constantly cycling relievers back and forth from Toledo to Detroit. Eleven of them in 10 days.
And in that time period, the Tigers used “reliever roulette” in all of the last 3 series.
What the Tigers are now doing is forming a different bullpen for every series. They are matching their pitchers’ strengths against the batters they will face. If a team is leftie-heavy, the Tigers call up their LHPs. The same for RHHs and RHPs.
The only snag is MLB’s rules about pitchers needing to stay in the minors for a minimum of 15 days after being optioned.
What do you think of this new strategy?

What do you think of the new strategy called "reliever roulette"?

1. I like it.

2. Not sure. Need to see this play out.

3. Don't think it's going to work in the long run.

I voted #3. This tells me that they don't have enough quality guys. This definitely won't work in the playoffs.

#3 for sure. Can Finnegan pitch every inning !

I voted for #3 too. Just like the pitching chaos, I don't have much confidence this will last deep into October.
