Totally Tigers
The Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal lost Monday night’s game. Despite multiple errors by his teammates, he did give up a grand slam (1 earned run) in the 7th inning despite his dominant pitching earlier in the game. He had thrown 99 pitches and has a 2.28 ERA.
Skubal averages 6-and-a-third innings per game that he pitches. Before Monday, he had thrown 2 games of 7 innings each.
He had hinted that he was getting a little tired. For the 2nd year in a row, he will be exceeding his previous innings pitched total for the year.
How should the Tigers manage him going forward especially as we consider the playoffs? Do the Tigers have enough starters or “pitching chaos” to pull them through the rest of the year and the playoffs?
And then there’s the bullpen. Skubal has pitched in some very close games in which the bullpen failed to get him the win.
Should the Tigers try to save his arm as much as possible for this last month of the season or should they continue to allow him to pitch 6+ innings?
Do take into consideration that the Tigers are in the hunt for home field advantage in the playoffs.
What should the Tigers’ management/coaching team do?
How should the Tigers manage Tarik Skubal's innings for September?
1. Pull back his innings a little.
2. Allow him to pitch as long as he can.
