WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers have had a certain amount of success by trading for 7 pitchers at the deadline. Their bullpen, which was ranked 3rd from the bottom recently, is now the 2nd best bullpen in MLB. Of special note is Kyle Finnegan who has yet to give up an earned run in over 14 innings since the Tigers acquired him. His ERA stands at 0.00 (through Monday’s games).

But the starting rotation continues to struggle for everyone not named Tarik Skubal. Here are the current ERA/WHIP stats (through Monday’s games):
Jack Flaherty – 4.74/1.286
Casey Mize – 3.95/1.309
Keider Montero – 4.66/1.432
Chris Paddack – 5.40/1.200 (moved to the bullpen just hours ago)
Charlie Morton – 4.61/1.207
Troy Melton has been looking good however Manager A. J. Hinch has stated that he won’t be making him into a starter this year due to inexperience and the need to monitor his innings.

Should the Tigers continue their pace, they will get a bye and start playing in the Division Series which is a maximum of 5 games in 7 days.
The Championship Series is the best of 7 games and played over a maximum of 8 days. The World Series is also the best of 7 and played over another maximum of 8 days. Teams play 2 games, then take a day off, play 2 more, followed by a day of rest, etc. for all 5 and 7 days of each series of playoffs.
The playoffs start in 1 month. How well are the Tigers set for their starting rotation?
Should they have a set rotation and supplement as needed with their bullpen or should they primarily use Tarik Skubal and a combo of last year’s “pitching chaos”?

What pitching strategy should the Tigers use for the playoffs?

1. A regular starting pitching rotation.

2. Tarik Skubal and then pitching chaos.

It would seem if Tiger management thought this team was good enough to make it to the WS or even possibly win it, They would have spent some money for a couple of key acquisitions. Vote 2
