Over the past week, a rash of manager firings took place. It is expected that more are to come.
The Red Sox were the first, as they remained in the cellar of the AL East. Their payroll is $256+ mill, ranking 7th in MLB.
The Phillies were next. Their payroll ranks #4 at $311+ mill.
In both cases, there was an assumption that all that expensive talent should have resulted in better play.
Next up may be the Mets who are one of MLB’s worst teams, sitting in the basement of the NL East and having a payroll of the 2nd highest team at $369 mill.
With all 3 teams, it’s been reported that there are managing and player personality issues that may be contributing to their poor performance.
On the other hand, the Dodgers are baseball’s most expensive team ($391 mill) and in 1st place in the NL West. The Yankees are also in 1st place and have MLB’s 3rd largest payroll at $333 mill.
The Blue Jays have the #5 payroll at $300+ mill and are playing under .500 baseball. The Padres – at $262 mill – are in 2nd place and the Braves at $247 mill and rank #8 in payroll are in 1st place.
In contrast, the Marlins and Guardians have the 2 lowest payrolls and are performing well. The Cardinals are strong at one of the lower payrolls as are the Reds and Athletics.
As a marker, the Detroit Tigers had 1 of MLB’s largest payrolls back in the 2006 – 2016 era and made the World Series twice, winning only 1 game. There were multiple reports about a number of personality conflicts in the roster.
Currently, they have the 10th largest payroll at $237+ mill. Unlike a decade ago, these players are cohesive and much credit is given to their manager, A. J. Hinch.
In summary, we’ve got expensive teams showing both good and bad performance. The same can be said of teams with lower payrolls.
But which factor plays the
bigger role in how well a team does? Is it the payroll that buys bigger talent or is it the intangibles that include team chemistry and managerial skill?
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!
For this one blog only, you’ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can also respond to other readers.
