WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

On Sunday, Javier Baez was ejected from the game and had to be held back by another player, coach and manager. At issue was a called strike 3 and how the umpire treated Baez as he ejected him.
The “strike” was clearly a ball and unfortunately, teams can’t argue balls and strikes.
The umpire who made the call was Phil Cuzzi. It’s not the first time he’s done something like this. He has become a controversial umpire and labeled as “inconsistent” in his calls.
Overall, the Tigers have experienced a number of bad calls this year. Studies also show that it’s not just them but with other teams as well. And there’s concern over the drop in accurately-called games by umpires.
Unfortunately, umpires can’t be fired by MLB. They have their own union which is loathe to terminate anyone, including the infamous Angel Hernandez.
So what should happen?
Are bad calls just part of the game? Is having the human element part of the game important?
Or should MLB institute the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS)? ABS (“robo-umps”) is being used in AAA with a new hitter challenge option. It was briefly tested in spring training this year.
What should MLB do?

Should MLB move to an automated umpiring system?

1. Yes, bring in the ABS technology.

2. No, keep the traditional umpiring system.
