Game #62: Detroit Tigers @ Chicago White Sox, Tuesday June 3rd, 7:40

tigers at bats with a runner on 3rd and less then 2 outs is just not very good.

Tigers Tv announcers have been major jinxes tonight when I have them unmuted. They were gushing over smiths fastball .
Both of them. Smith gave up 3 hits in a row off fastballs poorly located and he was ahead of all three 1-2 count.
He gave up two 1-2 count hits.
And after being ahead 1-2 he gave up a 2-2 count hit. That was the middle batter.
All three hits were off of poor pitches .

Sweet now one of our better relief pitchers is giving up hits,
Starting not to like bullpen days.

Freaking 0-2 count hits are just embarrassing.
If the batter can hit it it’s a bad pitch.

So now we have to take the next two game to take the series..
We need starting pitching

I heard on radio early in the game and Dickerson said Olson had an injection in his finger. So he isn’t even close yet. Im getting concerned about him.

Sweeney needs Toledo soon if he doesn’t start hitting.

Why not let one of the bullpen guys try and pitch more innings to start? Like Bo started and only went 1.1 inning. He used to be a starter I think coming up. Just asking ?

Lakeland, Fla. — Bryce Rainer, one of the Tigers’ premier prospects, was hurt Tuesday night on a pickoff attempt at first base that injured his right shoulder during a low-Single A game between Lakeland and Daytona at Publix Field/Marchant Stadium.

The mishap came in the bottom of the fourth, after Rainer, 19, and a gifted shortstop for the Flying Tigers, had reached first base on a fielder’s choice grounder.

Zachary Moore, pitching for the visiting Tortugas, made a throw to first in a bid to keep Rainer tight to the bag.

Rainer dived into the bag and immediately was in pain. He eventually got to his feet, in company with the Flying Tigers’ trainers, and shuffled to the dugout. He later left for the clubhouse, his right arm in a sling.

There was no immediate word on his diagnosis.

Rainer was the Tigers’ first-round pick last July, the 10th player taken in the 2024 MLB Draft.

He has been a lightning-flashing player, offensively and defensively, batting .293 in his first 34 games, with a .388 on-base average, an .843 OPS, and five home runs.

It has been expected that the left-handed batting Rainer would soon be moving to high-A West Michigan.

Rainer’s injury was ominously remindful Tuesday of a similar injury experienced in 2022 by Tigers infielder Colt Keith when Keith was playing at West Michigan.

Keith separated his shoulder on a pickoff dive at first base and missed the regular season’s final three months.

Yesterday’s blog was about the link between pitchers’ high speed velocity and arm injuries, esp. Tommy John.
It comes on the heels of Jacob DeGrom’s resurrection as a control pitcher, Tarik Skubal hitting 102.6 MPH and Jackson Jobe’s elbow injury that put him on the IL.

Watching pitchers throw at elite speeds can be exciting. But how many of these hurlers won’t develop some serious or long-lasting problems?
Is this speed necessary or should a priority be placed on smarter throwing that may help pitchers avoid the IL?
What do you think about watching Tiger pitchers throw this hard?

What do you think about watching Tiger pitchers throw this hard?

1. Let 'er rip!

2. The priority should be on extended health via control over velocity.

I agree. It's AJ thinking too much. Just like pinch hitting for a guy who is has a 1.486 OPS against Chicago this year

TMLR Recap: 6/3/25: Bryce Rainer Injured.
TMLR

Bryce Rainer. Lakeland’s start shortstop reached on a force out in the 4th inning. He dove back to first on a pickoff attempt and instantly recoiled in pain with what looks like a serious arm injury. It’s a depressing turn of events on what was otherwise another fun night in the farm system. Here’s hoping for a full recovery for Rainer, no matter the timetable.
