Game #79: Detroit Tigers @ Tampa Bay Rays, Sunday June 22nd, 2025, 12:10 Pm

MONDAY MUSINGS.

Today, it’s about quick hits – bits of news that catch my radar during the week as well as connecting the dots re ongoing stories. Even the quirky.
So let’s get to it! Here are the most interesting topics that hit my radar over the past week………..

Relievers are strange creatures. Brant Hurter gave up 3 ER in his first 4.1 innings of the season. Then 4 ER in his next 33.1 innings. And now 5 ER (and 4UER) in his last 1.2 IP.

Last nine High-A games for Tigers Kevin McGonigle:
Active 9-game hit streak 16 H, 15 R, 7 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI 2B in five consecutive games.

All-Star Ballot check-in: Leaders taking charge; Vlad now 1st at 1st while Acuña, Javy climb.

Gleyber Torres is hitting like SEAGER in 2025.
The much-maligned Yankees second baseman has been the offensive presence the Tigers needed.

The death of the Tigers’ offense has been greatly exaggerated.
Yes, Detroit’s offense has slipped recently. That’s OK when you start as the best in baseball.

Insider says Tigers’ trade deadline will feature this top prospect being shopped.

These Tigers are catching heat for current cold streak, but who actually deserves it?

Reds DFA Jeimer Candelario halfway through $45-million contract.
For all those Detroit Tiger fans who believed that the non-tender of Candelario was a mistake. He had 1/2 of a decent season (2023) since leaving Detroit. $45 mill got the Reds a .207/.265/.394/.660 hitter, neutral defender and negative WAR.

"Pitching chaos currently isn’t working. But both Harris and Hinch say it’s not because of the strategy, it’s because of the pitchers.

Last year, those who opened games had a 2.05 ERA with the bulk relievers earning a 3.65 ERA . In 2025, their stats are 4.50 ERA and 4.89 ERA respectively.

Bullpens are notoriously fickle from year to year. What we’re seeing now is somewhat of a shock but not really a surprise. Hinch has said the relievers aren’t executing.

Maybe it’s because they are too taxed"

This is the shit that I can't stand. They are taxed because of the strategy. Also, where is the blame for Fetter? If he gets all of the praise when the pitchers are doing well, she should probably blame him when they suck.
