Keider Montero since moving to the bullpen: 14.1 IP 9 H 4 ER 4 BB 16 K 2.51 ERA
.176 AVG What a dynamic weapon he’s been for the Tigers this season.

Jackson Jobe is scheduled to make his next rehab start tomorrow with Double-A Erie.

Jahmai Jones hits a 2 run homer for the Red Sox. At this point I’m not even surprised.

Tarik Skubal’s last 4 starts: 23 IP 15 H 5 R 4 ER 3 BB 32 SO 1.57 ERA 0.783 WHIP.

Kevin McGonigle and Riley Greene first left-handed hitting Tigers teammates to have 100 hits since Lou Whitaker and Kirk Gibson in 1985.

From today’s game notes.

Kaboom !
Kevin McGonigle leadoff homer to left ! 402 feet #9 on the season.
Dingler popsout
Keith K’s

(Last three need big comebacks late.
For the wild card tally, the Red Sox won, the Blue Jays lost, the Mariners are behind 2-0 in the first, the Orioles are ahead of the Astros in the 7th, and the Rangers are losing to the Braves in the 9th.

Troy Melton has excelled since returning to the mound in late May. Over nine starts comprising 55 innings, the 25-year-old Detroit Tigers right-hander has won five of six decisions while logging a 1.80 ERA and a 3.86 FIP. Sidelined for the initial two months of the season due to elbow inflammation, he is back to being one of baseball’s most-promising young pitchers.

What most stands out about Melton’s campaign to date? From an arsenal perspective, the answer has to be his cutter. Last season, he threw the pitch at a 10.8% clip to the tune of a .368 BAA and a 12.8% whiff rate. This year, the offering has elicited a .083 BAA and a 26.0% whiff rate while being thrown at a nearly-double 20.5% clip.
Why the increased reliance on his cutter, and why has it been so effective?

“I didn’t really change anything, which is the weirdest part,” Melton told me in the days leading up to the All-Star break. “I’ve just been throwing it way, way harder and getting a lot of swing-and-miss. I’ve been throwing my slider harder, too. I got one up to 91 [mph] in my last start, which is well above what I’d been doing previously.

“It’s definitely interesting,” the second-year big-leaguer continued. “It’s not even something I consciously changed, it’s just that I’ve had a little bit more intent. I realized that my intent wasn’t high enough, so I literally started trying to throw harder, and that didn’t sacrifice any execution. I’ve been executing just as good, if not better. My cutter has been kind of been the leading beneficiary of that.”

In terms of velocity, Melton’s cutter is averaging 92.2 mph, up from 90.9 mph in his rookie campaign. Locating the pitch better has likewise been a factor in its success, as has its role in his attack plan.

“We’ve been using the cutter a lot more early in counts, especially to righties, explained Melton, who has thrown 74 cutters to same-sided hitters and 88 cutters to opposite-sided hitters. “We didn’t really use the cutter to righties at all last year, and now I’m using it as a weapon against them. I’ve also been getting good results against lefties, so it’s just been performing well for me. Last year, it honestly wasn’t very good. This year it has transformed into a much better pitch.”

Previously featured here at FanGraphs in August, 2023, and again in September of last year, Melton is 8-3 with a 2.24 ERA over 100-and-two-thirds regular-season MLB frames. His ledger also includes an eight-inning outing in which he surrendered just one run against the Seattle Mariners in last October’s ALDS.

Kevin McGonigle is on track to capture AL Rookie of the Year honors, while Tarik Skubal is arguably the junior circuit’s best pitcher. How do the Motown stalwarts compare in terms of mentality? I asked that question to one of their All-Star teammates.

“I feel like they’re similar in that they’re both fiery,” Riley Greene told me. “That is the best way I can explain it. It’s like there is fire coming off of them when Kevin is hitting and when Skubal is pitching. They’re always confident. It’s like, ‘Hey, it’s you versus me and I’m going to win.’

“They hold themselves to high standards,” the outfielder went on to say. “They care more than anyone else and want to win more than anyone else.”

I can’t believe how hot the Red Sox are. I can’t stand them.
Freaking 13 wins in a row. And Jones hit a homer for them yesterday.
What’s crazy is this 13 game winning streak just has them at
50-48.

Tigers add Troy Watson to 40-man roster, move Will Vest to 60-day IL.
The Tigers made a move Sunday to keep 29-year-old right-hander Troy Watson in the organization.

Time for the Tigers to bring their A game back; we need to win today.

Keith throws ball away. Game tied freaking 1-1. I think a good throw gets him by a few feet.. sigh another hit. Why is Mize throwing such good pitches when ahead. He was ahead of the #9 hitter a .184 hitter.
Look at what that poor throw has done . Add so many pitches for Casey.

A good 3rd basemen makes that throw.

wtf. Challenge that. You had him.

1-1 after two innings.

Detroit Tigers' Keider Montero moved back into starting rotation.
Keider Montero has turned into an incredible, effective, trusted weapon for Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch.
Recently, Montero has worked out of the bullpen, pitching in high stress, high-leverage situations. And he’s handled everything like a pitbull. A fierce, highly-competitive pitcher who seems to thrive in big moments.

Recently traded Tiger has huge Fenway debut for red-hot Red Sox.
Mlive

Jones went downhill when they got rid of one of the three hitting coaches, Keith Beauregard to the twins last year.

Tigers have not done shit since Kevin’s homer.
Freaking awful at bats.

Come on Casey no walks . Especially lead off walks.
Non competitive pitches to Trout. Followed by a single.
Big trouble for Casey now unless he gets a dp.
Infield fly rule popout helps.
Casey gets Grissom to K
Mize great pitching out of the jam K.
