4th is in 2026.
7th is in 2027.

Scruggs i think is a backup.

The Detroit Lions didn’t waste time after spending the week at the combine to find a resolution to the lingering David Montgomery situation.

Detroit is sending the veteran running back to the Houston Texans in exchange for a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft and a 2027 seventh-round pick, along with offensive guard Juice Scruggs, per multiple national reports.

The Traveler’s Peace-of-Mind Bundle
Last week at the combine, general manager Brad Holmes said the Lions and Montgomery’s camp had been in touch. Holmes said they love Montgomery the person and player, but that “a player has to want to be at a certain place, as well.”

Then, ESPN reported on Sunday that Montgomery wanted out of Detroit, and the Lions were hopeful for a mid-round pick. Montgomery responded on X to the report with, “Damn, Dmo told you that?” His reaction even resulted in an ill-fated community note on the report. Then, 24 hours later, he’s headed to Houston, and the Lions are moving on.

Montgomery spent three seasons in Detroit. He had 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns in his first season, then at least 700 yards and eight scores in the next two. His usage slipped this past season, with Jahmyr Gibbs ascending into a superstar, no-doubt lead running back. Montgomery had 158 carries across 17 games, the fewest of his career and 27 fewer than he had in 14 games the previous season.

Montgomery is one of five running backs in team history to have 2,500-plus rushing yards and 30 touchdowns in their career. He joins Gibbs, Barry Sanders, Billy Sims and Dutch Clark, per NFL Researcher.

Between his social media activity and reports around the league, Montgomery was clearly frustrated. He wasn’t shy about wanting the ball more, and the Lions couldn’t argue with his feelings. After the season ended, Holmes said Montgomery “deserves to be in a situation where his skill set can be utilized.”

There was a thought that the hiring of offensive coordinator Drew Petzing could lead to a reunion. Throw in the fact that Montgomery spoke highly of Petzing, and there was optimism brewing for a reunion. But the Lions are moving forward without him before his extension even started here.

Montgomery’s cap hit was listed at $8.37 million for 2026. Since he was traded before June 1, the Lions will save just south of $4 million in space as they look to get even by the start of the new league year.

The Lions also add a solid fourth-round pick to their arsenal. They don’t have any third-round selections after last year’s Isaac TeSlaa trade. Houston had two fourth-round picks, with one projected to come much earlier in the order via the Commanders. It’s not yet clear which pick is headed to Detroit.
