Totally Tigers
On the heels of our Monday report about the rising cost of sports streaming subscriptions, the Detroit Tigers just announced their new tv broadcast platform.
They opted out of re-negotiating a new lower contract with their former regional sports network (RSN) FanDuel Sports due to bankruptcy concerns and the RSN’s expected inability to pay them. As they have done with other franchises, MLB has stepped in to take over broadcasts but significantly changed how teams will be paid.
The Tigers and Red Wings just announced the formation of Detroit SportsNet which will broadcast all games starting this year. It will be available to in-market (local) viewers only and offered to cable/satellite subscribers and direct-to-consumer streaming. There will be no blackouts for them.
Out-of-market fans will still be able to watch the games via a subscription to MLB.tv and subjected to blackouts (how many will depend upon their region). To watch all the teams, the MLB subscription is going up $20 to $149.99/year. For a single team, the price remains the same at $99.99.
Detroit Sportsnet will cost $189.99/year and includes both the Tigers and Red Wings’ games. There is no separate price if you only want to watch 1 team.
What do you think about this new broadcast option?
What do you think of the Tigers' newest tv broadcast option?
1. I like it.
2. The investment is too much.
3. Why can't I subscribe to just 1 team for a lower price?
