Tigers, Tarik Skubal headed toward historic arbitration showdown?

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers had 8 players salary arbitration eligible for the coming year. Only 1 did not reach an agreement. Tarik Skubal.
The Tigers offered $19 mill which is almost double what Skubal made last year – $10 million. Scott Boras is asking for $32 mill which is more than triple what his client made last year.
After Tarik earned his first Cy Young, he accepted the Tigers’ arbitration offer that raised his salary by $7.5 mill. Now, with his 2nd CY, he’s asking for a record-breaking salary.
The Tigers offered Skubal the largest arbitration salary ever for 1 of their players. Their offer would also rank as the largest raise ever given to a pitcher in MLB history.
The $13 mill difference also set another record as the biggest arbitration difference in MLB history.
Juan Soto, another Boras client, earned the highest single season arbitration salary several years ago. He got $31 million. Boras, always looking to break records, is now asking for $32 mill for Skubal. Soto was 24 when he earned that amount. Skubal is now 29.
Overall, a total of 18 players did not come to agreement with their teams. The largest salary gap between a player and his team is $1.5 mill. Fifteen of the 18 players were asking for an additional million or less.
Tarik is asking for $13 mill more than what the Tigers are offering.
Arbitration meetings are held in February. A panel must pick either the Tigers’ offer or Boras’ request. They cannot offer any salary in the middle.
Conceivably, both sides could continue to negotiate the price until the hearings are held.
What is your overall biggest reaction to this arbitration news?

What is your overall reaction to the record-setting salary ask by Tarik Skubal and Scott Boras?

1. Pay the man.

2. Such a greedy asking price.

3. It's clear that Skubal is good as gone after 2026.

VOTE

It's obvious he is as good as gone before during or after the 2026 season.

I voted 3. I also think if they take it to arbitration, Skubal wins.

The Tigers have talked to starting-pitchers Lucas Giolito and Chris Bassitt.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

Other than adding 2 relievers and over a dozen other pitchers to minor league contracts, the Detroit Tigers have been quiet so far this off-season.
As it currently stands, the entire infield and outfield from 2025 will remain the same.
There have been reports that teams are taking the presumed lockout into account as they build their rosters. A lockout that could significantly eat into the 2027 season.
Additionally, their latest broadcast partner is close to bankruptcy. The Tigers have just cancelled their broadcast contract with FanDuel. There is a possibility that they will renegotiate it but at a lower price. They have done this once already.
The Tigers are now faced with the potential loss of significant revenue due to FanDuel’s bankruptcy and the lockout believed to happen on December 1st.
How much of a factor do you believe these 2 factors are in the franchise’s lack of major signings this off-season?
Today’s blog addresses this question and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

How much of a factor do you believe these 2 factors are in the franchise's lack of major signings this off-season?

1. A big chunk.

2. A small part.

3. None because the roster is being built around the top prospects.

So as the offseason winds down .. the Tigers who need to make bolder, smarter, more decisive moves to get better, decided to:
1. Low ball, the best pitcher in baseball who they developed, in arbitration, whether we want them to sign him or not.
2. Never really bid on one of the best hitting, most culture defining 3B who signed for a reasonable 5/175M (150M present value), whether we wanted them to sign him or not.
The plan is to make $$$ and take ZERO risks. It's ALWAYS been the plan.

This should surprise nobody. When Mike Ilitch was fighting cancer and not running the Tigers, Chris told DD he had to trade Fister before he could sign Joe Nathan due to budget. My main question is why did Scott Harris agree to take this job under these circumstances. Unless he just enjoys the challenge. Harris has plenty of blame but Chris Ilitch is and will always be the main problem.

Alex Bregman cements his legacy as a Tigers' villain in signing with the Cubs.
Good riddance, Alex Bregman rumors.

The other villain is scott shithead boras.

Tigers should be lurking in trade shadows for polarizing Nationals All-Star.
A team can never have too many elite lefties in their starting rotation.
