well, even if the Tigers wanted to trade Skubal before the season, the return just got worse because of his salary. I wish they would have moved him early in the off season. Now they will get a comp pick for him in the 2027 draft

If he was traded, wouldn't he still have gone arbitration? And probably won again.

yes, but the team that they traded him to would have had to give the offer and dealt with the consequences of the result.
My quess is all 30 teams knew he'd ask for record money. 2026, money keeps going up on B2B Cy Youngs. I also suspect if he was on the trade market now, we'd get a handful. For me to have him walk at season's end I need a WS appearance.

THE VERDICT.
Totally Tigers

Early this afternoon (Thursday), the arbitration panel rendered judgement on Tarik Skubal’s salary for the 2026 season. Skubal will be earning $32 million.

What are the earliest takeaways?

1. Tarik will be gone no matter what after the 2026 season. Maybe even before the season ends.

2. Skubal is the secondary story. The bigger story is setting a precedent to weaken the arbitration system and lessen the control franchises have with team control.

3. Scott Boras used a loophole in the current CBA to break the current arbitration system using Skubal as his test case. He is on the record as being immensely opposed to it and is working with the MLBPA to change the system for the next CBA.

4. The arbitration system now will be one of the biggest bones of contention for both sides as they negotiate a new CBA. This could easily delay the 2027 season.

5. Any significant changes to the arbitration system will make it harder for teams to keep young talent. It will become harder to build a core roster.

6. It is still unclear whether the signing of Framber Valdez was to give the Tigers a 1-2 punch in the rotation or to serve as Skubal’s replacement if and when he leaves. We’ll learn more over the coming weeks.

The system does suck and needs to be changed. The players get screwed over when it comes to getting paid. That said, the arb system needs to take a backseat to fixing the disparity between large market teams and mid/small market teams.

after a few days to let the fact that they signed him, I'm a little disappointed. This signing pretty much guarantees that Skubal will not get traded and the Tigers will only get a comp pick for him. They better make it to the WS this year.

2 trade doors Tigers, Scott Harris just opened after Framber Valdez signing.
Don't stop now, Scott.

Paredes would be a good fit, but from what I read, the Astros want to keep him and trade Christian Walker. The OF in the article doesn't make much sense for the Tigers. Adding another LH hitting outfielder doesn't make sense.
