FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Has any team this off-season been as busy addressing their starting rotation for the 2026 season than the Detroit Tigers?
Less than a week ago, the Tigers hadn’t been through the Skubal arbitration hearing. They hadn’t signed Framber Valdez or Justin Verlander. And we had assumed that Reese Olson would be back at full-strength.
We’re still absorbing all the changes and it will be at least a couple weeks before we know how this rotation will shake out and start to gel.
I’ve got 5 questions/observations about how this rotation will evolve.

Kevin McGonigle: “I’m going to do whatever I can to maybe force their hand and bring me up” this year.
He’ll leave the jewelry to his pal Max Clark: “I’m like, ‘Yo, nah, I can’t be spending my money on that.’”

Full details of Framber Valdez’s record-breaking contract with Tigers revealed.
This is the cost of behaving like a contender.
MCBTB

Philosophical change with a conservative team through the year, now they might sign players and defer some of the money like this deal and with Verlander.

SATURDAY SURVEY.

Spring training has officially started for the Detroit Tigers. Over the winter, here’s what they added to the roster:
  • Kept Gleyber Torres
  • Signed Kyle Finnegan
  • Signed dozens (majority pitchers) to minor league contracts as depth and development
  • Signed Framber Valdez
  • Signed Justin Verlander
The team is now said to have the best 1-2 punch of all MLB starting rotations.
However, there remain questions about who will play 3B. Of additional concern is the need for a RHB and more offensive needs.
Back in December, 53% of you gave the Tigers a C for their off-season so far.
Now that it’s spring training, would you alter your vote given the new moves?
What grade would you give the Tigers now for what they’ve done to the roster?

What final grade would you give the Tigers for their roster moves this winter?

1. A

2. B

3. C

4. D

I gave them a B.

I would probably go C+

If you really look what they did, it isn't much. In hindsight, they really screwed up by giving Torres the qualifying offer, and they botched the arbitration offer by lowballing Skubal. The Framber signing was good for the rotation, and having JV in the D is going to be fun.

The most bet on players to win the AL Rookie of the Year at BetMGM:
Kevin McGonigle - 19%
Carter Jensen - 15%
Trey Yesavage - 11%
Samuel Basallo - 9.5%
Munetaka Murakami - 8.5%

Parker Meadows is a massively intriguing and polarizing players who showed everything he can do for 7 weeks in 2024…. What’s insanely frustrating is he’s been unplayable for about 350 other AB the last 2 years .. so bad he’s had to be demoted twice .. it’s now or never time..
