Tigers 2025-2026 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender, Skubal Cy Young Award

March 14: Max Scherzer strikes out Kevin McGonigle on three pitches in the first inning. He is hitting .077 (1-for-13) with one home run, four walks (plus one hit by pitch) and three strikeouts in his past eight games in Grapefruit League play, spanning 18 plate appearances.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch on pitchers throwing more non-fastballs to Kevin McGonigle, who has walked six times in his past seven games: "A lot of balls away, too. We're getting closer and closer to the season style, where there's not a lot of free pitches. ... Scouting reports are starting to be paved a little bit. ... Young hitters are going to see a complete change."

MONDAY MUSINGS.
Totally Tigers

The Tigers rotation is currently set up in this order:
Tarik Skubal, Framber Valdez, Jack Flaherty, Justin Verlander + Casey Mize.
If that holds into the regular season, Justin Verlander’s 1st home start would be April 5th on Sunday Night Baseball against the St. Louis Cardinals.

With about 50 family and friends in the park, Kevin McGonigle turned on a first-pitch slider and crushed it 437 feet to right for a 3-run HR, his third homer of the spring and second in Grapefruit League play. 5-0 Tigers.

AJ Hinch says Justin Verlander got a new locker from his previous time with the Tigers. He's in between Tarik Skubal and former teammate Framber Valdez, and has "developed a really good relationship" with Skubal.

Interesting to see how McGonigle has gotten significant reps at SS, 3B, and 2B over the last year. Makes it all the more difficult to justify keeping him off the roster.

AL Central preview: Kansas City Royals.
The Royals are a top-heavy team relying on stars and rookies to carry them in a generally weak division.

Bless You Boys 2026 Detroit Tigers prospects #6: SS Jordan Yost.
The slick fielding prep shortstop’s weakness on draft day was his power potential, but he’s showing gains in camp.

We don’t generally go out of order with our spring prospect reports, but the timing is too good for Jordan Yost. The Detroit Tigers first round pick last summer stepped to the plate for his first at-bat as a professional on Sunday afternoon and made a little magic. The Tampa native had friends and family in attendance as he dug in with the bases loaded and no outs, trying to just hit something to the outfield. He did, crunching a grand slam to right field on a 1-0, 95 mph fastball from a Triple-A level pitcher. Welcome to pro ball.

Casey Mize reveals reason behind spring troubles as Tigers rotation thins.
There's nowhere else to turn if he can't figure it out.

Flaherty won today allowing 5 runs in 5 innings, against what looked like a bunch of players not on the phillies 25 26 man roster.
