Tigers 2025-2026 Offseason: Trades, Free Agents, Call ups, Rule 5, tender, non-tender, Skubal Cy Young Award

Kevin McGonigle, MLB Pipeline's No. 2 overall prospect and a 2023 first-round pick from Pennsylvania high school, rocketed through the minors with a .305 average last season and hit .286 with three homers in spring training. The Tigers announced his arrival with a 'Welcome to the Show' graphic, joining a young core including Riley Greene, Colt Keith, and Tarik Skubal amid playoff momentum. Fans and analysts like Ben Verlander are hyped, calling him a potential 2026 AL Rookie of the Year as he starts off the bench Thursday in San Diego.

Kevin McGonigle has made the Tigers Opening Day roster! MLB's No. 2 prospect hit 2 homers with a .888 OPS this Spring Training.

There’s a good chance, depending on the lineup that you could see an all drafted or internationally signed Tigers lineup for the first time since the draft started in 1965.

Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark can be a transformative combination for the Tigers if they play to their potential, says Ken_Rosenthal.
"It might make them into a World Series contender".

Kevin McGonigle will wear No. 7 with the Tigers.
May he hit even better than some previous Tigers greats who wore number 7.
Harvey Kuenn, Rocky Colavito, and George Kell.

Kevin McGonigle wasn't supposed to stick at shortstop. He has changed the narrative in spring training, becoming MLB-ready at two positions with consistency in his pre-pitch preparation."He's been very, very good on defense," A.J. Hinch said.

McGonigle is the most complete hitting prospect in baseball, blending an elite hit tool with a patient approach and budding power. He was fantastic during Spring Training with a 1.034 OPS.

Smart baseball people (Tigers front office, AJ Hinch) had reason to be, at first resistant, and steadily ultra-careful, in weighing Kevin McGonigle. The problem if he had been sent down: The Tigers offense almost certainly will have issues, especially early. McGonigle would (almost certainly) be hitting at Triple A Toledo. Second-guesses, if not regret, would have been almost inevitable.

He may struggle a bit as he adjusts to major league spin his first 100-150 AB’s but even if he does, it’s way more beneficial than going to Toledo. If there is a bit of a prolonged learning curve, get it out of the way now and have him rolling once he’s past it.

OF Trei Cruz is being optioned, per league source. Cruz has impressed after his position switch to OF and is expected to be a big part of their mix this season.
Playing every day CF, just in case.

McGonigle is the 15th Tiger player to debut before the age of 22 since the year 2000.

Kevin McGonigle had a career: .308 AVG .410 OBP .922 OPS in the minors.

Sources also state that the Detroit Tigers and Kevin McGonigle are working on a longterm extension to keep the MLBs #2 Prospect in the Motor City for a long time.

Tigers don't have the best offense in the league by any means, but they do have one that they can optimize really well thanks to versatility:
McGonigle can play 3B, SS, 2B
Keith can play 1B, 2B, 3B
Greene can play CF occasionally
Báez, McKinstry, Vierling can play anywhere.

K-Mac absolutely tore it up in 2025 across MiLB & AFL2025.
MiLB Stats: 397 PA .305/.408/.583 .991 OPS, 182 wRC+, .447, wOBA.
He's entering a very protected lineup.

Kevin McGonigle made the Tigers’ Opening Day roster. Detroit’s top prospect stole the show at shortstop in spring training. We talked with McGonigle in Lakeland about his journey to the bigs, learning from vets and Alan Trammell, and why he’s ready now.

It looks like Enmanuel De Jesus has made the Opening Day roster for the Tigers.
His agent just confirmed that he has made the team!

Other Tigers roster moves: Max Anderson, John Peck, Tomás Nido, Burch Smith, Sean Guenther, Ricky Vanasco reassigned to minor-league camp.

Tigers roster moves: Wenceel Pérez, Jace Jung, Trei Cruz optioned to Triple-A Toledo; Parker Meadows makes the Opening Day roster.

The Tigers today signed right-handed pitcher Connor Seabold to a 2026 split major league contract worth $800,000 at the big-league level.
Right-handed pitcher Beau Brieske has been placed on the 60-day injured list with a left adductor strain. Detroit’s 40-man roster stands at 40 players.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers’ 2026 season starts tomorrow (Thursday) with the first broadcast.
The Tigers, like the majority of teams, have moved away from regional sports networks and have aligned with MLB to help provide tv broadcasts. While some new contracts with cable and streaming platforms has been created, they are still working on finalizing contracts with all providers.
No matter how you watch the game, will you be tuned into Opening Day on tv?

Will you be watching Opening Day on tv?

1. Wouldn't miss it.

2. Will try to make it.

3. Still don't have an official provider.

4. No, a subscription is just too expensive.

The Tigers have made the following roster moves to reduce their active roster to 26 players ahead of tomorrow’s season opener in San Diego.

INF Kevin McGonigle has been selected from Double-A Erie.

RHP Dylan Smith has been designated for assignment.

RHP Brenan Hanifee has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain (retro to March 22).

LHP Bailey Horn has been placed on the 15-day injured list as he continues his recovery from a left elbow arthroscopy (retro to March 22).

INF Trey Sweeney has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain (retro to March 22).

The entire Toledo lineup could play in the Majors right now. How good they would be, is the question. At least they are playing every day at Toledo, so if someone gets hurt or struggles on the Tigers, these guys are ready to come up and face ML pitching.
