Tigers hire former shortstop Josh Wilson as scout, add to analytics staff.

The Detroit Tigers announced the hiring of several new scouts on Monday, including a former executive with the Baltimore Orioles and a journeyman middle infielder.

The team said that P.J. Jones, John Stockstill and Josh Wilson will work as Major League scouts, while Joey Lothrop, Steve Taylor and Matt Zmuda are joining the amateur scouting department as area scouts. Justin Henry was promoted to regional crosschecker. Veteran scout Dave Lottsfeldt was also hired as a regional crosschecker.

Stockstill worked for the Orioles from 2005-2018, rising to the level of director of player personnel. Wilson spent parts of eight seasons in the big leagues, logging his last Major League at-bat with the Tigers in 2015.

In the team?s growing analytics department, Jim Logue was promoted to director of analytics, and Drew Jordan, Maggie O?Hara, Shane Piesik and Danny Vargovick were promoted to senior analysts. The club hired Josh Kragness as senior software engineer and brought Beau Horan, Aidan Kearns and Zach Wolf on board as analysts.

Video operations team members David Allende and Jim McKew will now be coordinators of player development.

Rafael Martinez, who has held many positions with the organization and served as batting practice pitcher in 2018, is now director of Latin American player development.

At the Dominican Academy, Wilfredo Crespo and Jimmy Ortiz are now administrators.

Additionally, Beavis and Butthead still remain in their positions.

There's a Beavis and a Butthead? Avila is the Butthead, right? Who's Beavis?

I don't know if it's good or bad news, but at least they are trying to improve scouting and analytics.

Probably a little bit but I remember we had nothing for years and the A's had it for ages yet during that stretch we did much better overall.

Pretty sure that had more to do than analytics

Total payroll in from 2005-2018
A's $942 million
Tigers $1.846 billion

Average pay roll in that time
A's $67.29 million
Tigers $131.92 million

I can’t figure this team out sometimes. I thought they were shedding payroll for a time but then they hand out generous contracts to mediocre vets. Maybe I’m wrong, but this tells me that the minor league guys are either not good enough or not ready yet (or maybe they’re just desperate to put butts in the seats, but that doesn’t seem cost effective).

I hope they eventually figure out the whole scouting and analytics thing eventually to sustain success. I understand that it takes a while to build up after being so bad for so long.

I can live with the Tigers being bad for a few years in an effort to build a top tier farm system, but that hasn’t been the case lately...they’re higher now but still not great.

David Chadd

I just hope these new people in analytics are good and have practice in all of it.
They might be building it slowly and surely, but they keep all the bozos in there. Clown Shoes Avila, Stumble **** Chadd who was kicked out of Boston and has been a fixture here for way too many years, Owens, Pleis, Littlefied who was run out of Pittsburgh and he too has found a home for way too long in the Tigers FO, Bream, and most scary is Leyland who seems to be against most all of the analytics. and for whatever reason, they listen to him....
