There is a little intrigue in the air. Reports claim that the Detroit Tigers may be showing the first signs of interest in Justin Verlander.
Last year, the Tigers used 15 different starting pitchers, not including “openers.” And as you know, you can never have enough pitching.
They brought in Alex Cobb, Charlie Morton and Chris Paddack last year – to disastrous results. Verlander is about to turn 43.
He had a rough first half of 2025 but in the 2nd (13 starts), his ERA was 2.60 and he was hitting double-digits strikeouts in 5-6 innings. While missing a full month, he still threw 152 innings.
He finished the year with a .500 record.
It was reported that the huge improvement in the 2nd half of the year was due to adding a sweeper into his pitching mix.
It is still unknown if Tarik Skubal will still be a Tiger for all, part or none of the 2026 season. Rounding out the rotation is Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize and Reese Olson who is returning from the IL.
Newcomer Drew Anderson is not yet confirmed to be in the rotation and Jackson Jobe is highly doubtful to return in 2026. Keider Montero is also not a shoo-in while Troy Melton looks promising but is still very untested.
Verlander would add depth and a veteran voice. He also played for A. J. Hinch and would have the support and advice of pitching coach Chris Fetter.
Then there’s the chance for him to wear the Olde English D again and potentially retire as a Tiger.
Should the Tigers bring him back?

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you know that the Detroit Tigers are bringing back Justin Verlander. A 1-year contract at $13 mill.
He’ll reunite with his former manager, A. J. Hinch. What an upgrade from Brad Ausmus when he was last here! And now the chance to work with Chris Fetter.
JV revamped his pitching arsenal in the 2nd half of last season to very nice results.
Unlike other popular players, Justin did not want to leave Detroit. He was pushed out in the infamous salary dump.
He returns to Detroit, about to turn 43 years old. He is still pitching at elite levels, reaching double-digit strikeouts in 6 innings of work several times last year. His 4-seam fastball was clocked between 94 – 98 in the 2nd half of last season.
How do you feel about his return? You can also consider the intangibles such as veteran experience, mentoring, nostalgia and what it may mean regarding Cooperstown.

How do you feel about the return of Justin Verlander?

1. Thrilled.

2. Cautious/a little hesitant.

3. Too risky.
