Hoops vs Memphis

Michigan faces Memphis in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis today (5:00 p.m, ESPN2). It?s the sort of opening game of a multi-team event where we think we know much more about both teams than we actually do. And one where the result comes down to who can better handle playing amidst the outside noise of a tropical paradise surrounded by water parks and casinos on the Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving.

KEYS

Game control: Michigan isn?t going to beat this Memphis team if it tries to play open gym, and Michigan has spent a lot of time playing open gym early on this season. It tried to do that against Long Beach State, and Memphis has wildly more talented players than Long Beach State ? the sort of players who thrive in that style of play. This is a classic spot where a Beilein team would slow the game down into a half-court battle of execution, but that isn?t this Michigan team?s style either. For me, it is all about finding the right balance and picking the right spots to attack quick, while minimizing the easy looks in the other direction.

Second big advantage or disadvantage: Memphis wants to play with four perimeter players and one big, and Michigan will play two bigs. That means Olivier Nkamhoua has to win his matchup. He must impose himself offensively and hold his own defensively in a game that will probably require him to guard on the perimeter more than he?d like.

Play defense: I?d usually focus on some certain part of stopping Memphis here, but Michigan?s defensive effort against Long Beach State was so poor that I think the goal here has to be executing some semblance of a defensive gameplan with consistency. If U-M can show improvement defensively in transition and against ball screens, it should have a chance in this game. If the effort on that end looks like Friday, it might be a long evening.

BOTTOM LINE

At this point, it?s hard to have any clue what we are going to get from this Michigan team. The team that won at St. John?s has a real chance in this environment; the team that didn?t bother to defend Long Beach State could easily go home 0-3.

KenPom pegs it as a near toss-up, projecting a 79-78 Memphis win and giving the Wolverines a 47% chance at a win.

For those planning ahead, the winner tips at 5:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving against Arkansas or Stanford, and the loser tips at 7:30 p.m.

GO BLUE!

Dug has missed 2 or 3 free throws down the strech and I know the runner is his shot but down 59-58 I prefer a different look. Williams did miss a three before the missed runner. . But down 16 they has a shot for the lead and missed. Down 4 with only a few minutes left. To many turnovers. I sm watching on my tablet. So I have not watched the whole game.

Sadly back to back threes has doomed the comeback.

Who is the go to guy down the stretch? Williams dribbles turns it over.

Looks like 3 point shooting and way to many turnovers has done Michigan in tonight.

Like that they fought back after being down 16. Just couldn't get over the hump when they had multiple opportunities in the last 5 minutes.

Not going to bother posting game threads anymore. No activity so I don't think anyone cares.

I feel you.

Basketball is?frustrating and uninspiring.

Plus we?re not exactly a basketball school right about now.

Here?s what l?m going to do.

I?m going to carry the game thread posting until you feel like doing it against it again.

I?m not going to include any details nor analysis (as if I could https://m.youtube.com/shorts/mrJVBjI3EPI) but we can keep it going until basketball is back.

Basketball is still my favorite and the most important thing tonight was seeing Juwan back on the bench. Very happy his recovery is going well enough that he's already back in some capacity.

Cool.

So are going to continue posting the hoops threads?

If you do, I?ll tune in and post.

I make my own schedule, and and I literally make my schedule around Michigan/Detroit sports.

Early in the hoops season I confess M football and the Lions have been center stage, but I can make an effort.

Threads are important for people who missed the game and we get an idea how the game went. Keep it up.

I'll help keep the game thread going.. Holidays have me going in and out of the house.

Im just very uninspired by Howard's coaching. I know he hasn't been there because of his surgery but I just can't put my finger on it. I like some of the players. Like the fight to get back in the game against Memphis but they had multiple chances to push through and just couldn't do it like last year. Just another close loss.

I'll keep up the posting then. Kind of thought I was on an island of caring about hoops season.
