Tigers vs. marlins Game Thread September 29

We were favored over the Cardinals big time... and a slight favorite over the giants

But the fact that we beat teams that we were not supposed to to get to those WS games where we were favored tells it all.

We can't win the world series right now. It doesn't matter how great we are playing or how horrible we are playing. It only matters what we do in each game and each series going forward. We were playing well when we entered the world series both times and then we had the 6 day lay off and then we went cold. Could happen again or we could score 10 runs a game in the playoffs. The past doesn't matter.

What is the wild card scenario? Looks like Cleveland will win today so they are in the game. Tampa is about to win. Texas is down early. If Texas wins as well do they have the tie breaker over Tampa or is that a 1 game playoff to see who plays the Indians in a 1 game playoff???

I think Tampa and Texas have to play with the winner playing the Indian.

I think..

Your right. But then so am I.. We were a huge favorite over the cardinals. Plus over the Giants.. not sure what it tells except we lost in the WS when we should have won... just frustrating I guess... What do you want me to say?

In my baseball experience as a fan getting no hit is embarrassing and the correct word to use about today's game and the series in general verses the Marlins who are a really bad baseball club..

Same for me, We are from a different generation gone by i guess...LOL

In other news, Miggy is the first AL hitter to win the batting title 3 years in a row since Wade Boggs did it 4x in a row from '85-88, the first period since Gwynn won 4x in a row from '94-97, and the first Tiger to do so since Ty Cobb (who did it 3 separate times not including the disputed year that breaks up his streak of 9 in a row.)

I wonder if a team has won the WS after being no-hit in its final regular season game.

I was just going to post this. I think this got a bit lost in the shuffle since he's been looking like he's been playing hurt for over a month now. This is crazy that a guy with power can win 3 batting titles. unreal.

By the way, did anyone have Adrian Beltre leading the AL in hits this year?

nope. '84 angels finished the year at .500, and while the '75 As won the west division, they got swept in the ALCS by the red sox.

The Tigers often putrid offensive performance during the final month of the season has somewhat tempered and diluted my hopes, enthusiasm, and expectations for the postseasson. If they manage to defeat the A's in 5 games or less, they would be rekindled, but if not, I won't feel quite as let down or upset as I would have if they were instead red hot going in and riding a long winning streak. That posted, I have reason to believe that the Tigers will be competitive at least, mostly b/c of their starting roto, and am holding out hope they won't be humiliated, embarrassed, or even worse, also get swept in three games by the A's in their upcoming ALDS.

Losing is one thing, but getting no hit and not doing anything about by pinch hitting some of the starters that sat all game is what pisses me off.
Avila was the only pinch hitter the last 3 innings for Porcello.
fongool to Leyland.

True.
and Miggy is the first right handed Hitter to Win 3 straight since Rogers Hornsby in the 20's.

Last out Verlander has gotten at 1B was a Michael Saunders 6th-inning groundout Sept. 18, two starts ago. He's gone 13 innings without one. #anomaly

I guess that means he's changing speeds well and getting guys out in front.

Verlander struck out 10 and now has 22 strikeouts in his last 10 innings pitched. He's three strikeouts shy of matching Tommy Bridges for fourth on the Tigers' all-time list with 1,674 career strikeouts.
Verlander will finish the season with a 13-12 record, 217 strikeouts and a 3.46 ERA. It's the fewest victories, fewest strikeouts and highest ERA he's recorded in a full season since 2008.

Tigers have now had 14 no-hitters thrown against them.
HOFs Bob Feller, Bob Lemon & Nolan Ryan and future HOF Randy Johnson headline group.
