A former S.C. State University and current Detroit Lions offensive tackle was arrested at an Orangeburg hotel Monday on a drug-related charge.

Listed as a resident of both Lawrence, Ga., and Detroit, Johnny C. Culbreath was charged with simple possession of marijuana.

The 23-year-old NFL rookie went before Orangeburg County Magistrate Richard Murray later Monday, where he paid a fine of $412 to end the case.

Culbreath declined to comment when reached Tuesday.

A Detroit Lions spokesperson said the organization would return a call seeking Culbreath's status with the team. That call was not returned by late Tuesday.

According to an Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office incident report, Culbreath was staying at the Country Inn and Suites on Citadel Road near Interstate 26 Monday.

Just after 10 a.m., a hotel clerk called deputies saying a man on the fourth floor was using marijuana. When deputies entered the floor, they smelled what they believed was marijuana.

As deputies approached room 411, "Culbreath came out and this unit smelled a strong odor of what appeared to be marijuana," the report states.

Surveillance video caught Culbreath placing something in the drawer of a table in the hallway. When deputies asked what the object was, Culbreath said "two blunts."

The officers found a small plastic bag with plant material inside the table.

Culbreath was a starter for S.C. State during the 2008, 2009, and 2010 campaigns. He was named the MEAC Player of the Year after the 2009 season.

Detroit placed Culbreath on injured reserve in September for an unspecified medical illness, ending his 2011 season. He was picked in the seventh round (209th overall) last year.
