ALLEN PARK -- The Kickalicious era has come to an end before it ever really began.

The Detroit Lions cut Norwegian placekicker Havard Rugland on Tuesday morning. They must trim their roster to 75 players by 4 p.m.

Cornerback DeQuan Menzie also was released, leaving Detroit with three more cuts to make before the deadline.

Rugland was a camp sensation for the Lions, after rising from YouTube sensation to NFL player. He filmed a trick-kick video in Norway last year, then was signed by Detroit this offseason.

His fame grew after the preseason opener, when he knocked through both field-goal attempts, each from at least 49 yards. Even his veteran teammates were captured by the moment.

National publications such as GQ visited Allen Park to interview the YouTube star, and the Norwegian press was a regular sight at both the practice facilities and even on the road in Cleveland.

But for as good as his story felt, Rugland always faced long odds of making the team with longtime veteran and former Pro Bowler David Akers battling for the same roster spot.

Akers' workload increased in the past week, and he attempted all five field goals against the Patriots. Rugland, meantime, has struggled this week in practice, pushing at least three field goals to the right.

The writing was on the wall for Rugland to be cut. Even coach Jim Schwartz wasn't high on Rugland's chances when asked about him last week.

"I don't know," he said. "We'll see if the situation comes up. We're not out here having a county fair, circus or paying a dollar and having a shot at doing something. If it comes up within the scheme of practice or games and he's called upon, I'm sure he'll go out and give it his best."

Now the circus has left town.

Akers has shown a great ability to choke in recent years, this could definitely backfire.

Akers sucked last year...that's why the 49ers cut his ass. He will probably be better in Detroit since it is indoors but I am not confident in his abilities at this time.

Akers was hurt last year. Thats why he sucked. Akers made a 63 yarder Week 1 last year and was perfect for FGS in the Super bowl.

The Akers hate is dumb.

Lions fans were spoiled with Hanson. They will hate Akers this year.

I was pulling for the kid, because it would have been nice to have your kicker for the next decade rather than the next year or two, but in all reality, Akers proved he still has the goods, and he's ready to get back to form.

He's a pro-bowl quality kicker, and I can't shed a tear over having that on the roster. He also hit another 63 yarder last week in practice, so he's still got a big boot of his own.

Ages 34-38

Akers 170-209 .813

Hanson 122-142 .859

The difference in 5 years, assuming they both had 28 attempts (Hanson's average for the 5 year period). Akers makes 22.8. Hason makes 24.1. That is less than 2 (1.3 to be exact) a year difference.

Under 40

Akers 116-128 .906

Hanson 73-78 .936

Akers has averaged 10 more attempts per year from ages 34-38. Assuming they both had 15 attempts (again Hanson's average) of under 40 yards, Akers make 13.6 and Hanson makes 14.0. Less than a field goal made difference between the two.

They are both about equal for PAT.

Akers is old, but still a viable kicker if he doesn't have a huge fall off. Akers has had 37 FGA or more each of the last 5 seasons. Hanson only had 37 FGA or more once in his career, 42 at age 23.

Akers made 69% last year. He missed one inside 29, missed 2 between 30-39, went 7-13 between 40-49. Let's hope that he doesn't repeat those numbers this year!

I don't have a ton of faith in Akers after last year, but on a selfish, irrelevant level....I'm very happy we won't have to hear the term "kickalicious" anymore.

I'm not sold on Akers but the YouTube guy, I don't see making an impact in the NFL.

He was hurt last year. He's as solid as they come...

I might have the record for drafting Akers 9 straight years in fantasy football. The streak ended in 2008.

I follow the 49ers pretty closely. He was dinged up a bit but not hurt. He has had a good career but has a habit of missing some pretty big kicks. Last year he absolutely sucked. The 49ers went in a different direction for a reason.

Unfortunately Hanson seemed to miss a big kick or two lately. I still love the guy but he didn't always come through either.

So we went from a backup QB being the most popular player on a team, to a backup kicker?

What gave you faith the youtube guy would be better? He looked akward on the kickoffs and at least one of the field goal attempts....Akers could make the same exact trick video.

Hey, I admit it, I was a HUGE Rugland fan. How can you not root for that kind of Cinderella story?

But I am a bigger fan of Lions wins. And if Akers is the better kicker, then I'm glad he's still OUR kicker.

+1
Pretty much sums up how I feel.

As long as:

1. Akers performs at least at 90% of Hanson's level
2. Lions are being smart in preparing to replace Akers within 3 years.
3. Rugland is not picked up by another team and perform better than any/all Lions kicker

Then I'm good with it.
