New President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris, has stated that he will be hiring a GM. What he didn?t say is when.

Harris admitted that he has yet to start the process and does not have a timeline to get it done.

Not all teams have a GM. And when there has been a change in leadership, some organizations have waited a year before hiring one.

There are multiple reasons why the hiring of a GM in Detroit has taken a back seat. Some were detailed in yesterday?s blog in which I offered 5 good reasons why it may be preferred that the Tigers don?t rush into it.

What do you think? Is it important for the Tigers to have one for this year or will better results be achieved by waiting?

When should the Tigers hire a new GM?

1. Before the 2023 season starts.

2. Wait a year until Scott Harris knows the organization better.

1922: Morgan G. Bulkeley, first president of the National League and later governor of Connecticut and U.S. senator, dies. As president of the Hartford Dark Blues club, Bulkeley presided over the NL's first meeting and headed the league for one year. He will be elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937, in spite of his relatively short involvement in baseball.

1938: The brothers Joe, Vince and Dom DiMaggio play together for the first time, making up an outfield for an All-Star team in a West Coast charity game.

1939: In a trade of veteran shortstops - or "worn-out shortstops?" as one newspaper describes it - the Cubs acquire Billy Rogell from the Detroit Tigers for Dick Bartell. Rogell? who injured his arm playing handball the previous year? will hit just .136 before hanging up his spikes. The Tigers will release "Rowdy Richard" 5 games into the 1941 season.

1951: Brooklyn Dodgers president Walter O'Malley denies that his minor league team system constitutes a monopoly. He cites the Dodgers' deficit in 1950.

1952: The American League approves a 2-league waiver rule curbing inter-league trading after June 15th. At the Winter Meetings a new bonus rule is approved? replacing the one that was instituted in 1946 and repealed in 1950. This new rule sets the bonus limit at $4?000 or the player could be lost though the draft. This second bonus rule lasts until abolished in 1957.

1958: The Senators give walking papers to 3B Eddie Yost? sending him to Detroit along with Rocky Bridges and OF Neil Chrisley. The Nats receive infielders Reno Bertoia and Ron Samford and OF Jim Delsing in exchange.

1962: Answering rumors that senior consultant Branch Rickey wants Stan Musial to retire, St. Louis Cardinals owner August Busch says Musial will play until it is time to become a club vice president. Further, Bing Devine is still running the club.

1962: Tigers collect 14 hits, including home runs by Norm Cash, Al Kaline, and Dick McAuliffe, in an 11-4 win over the Hanshin Tigers in Japan.

1969: Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers and Mike Cuellar of the Baltimore Orioles finish dead even in American League Cy Young Award voting. McLain posted a record 24-9 record with 181 strikeouts and a 2.80 ERA. McLain led the AL in Wins, IP, and Shutouts.

1970: Minnesota Twins pitcher Jim Perry wins the American League Cy Young Award in a close race. Perry receives 55 points to edge out Dave McNally (47), Sam McDowell (45) and Mike Cuellar (44).

1974: Mike Marshall of the Los Angeles Dodgers becomes the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award. Ironman Marshall set major league records with 106 appearances and 208 innings pitched in relief. (15 Wins - 21 Saves - 2.42 ERA).

1976: The Detroit Tigers purchased Luis Alvarado from the St. Louis Cardinals.

1984: Willie Hernandez wins the American League Most Valuable Player Award, joining Rollie Fingers as the only relief pitchers to be named MVP and Cy Young Award winners in the same season. Willie was the third Tiger pitcher to win the honor, after Hal Newhouser and Denny McLain.
Since then, Justin Verlander has joined the group as the fourth Tigers Pitcher to win the award.

1992: Bill Gullickson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
1992: Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1996: In Chicago, the MLB owners decisively reject a proposed labor agreement that would have ended a three-year stalemate. The 18-12 vote threatens to plunge baseball back into full-fledged hostilities between the owners and players' union.

2001: Denying it is a negotiating ploy, Commissioner Bud Selig is given the authority to "begin the process" of eliminating two "to be announced" teams by the MLB owners by a 28-2 vote. Donald Fehr, the Players Association executive director, calls the action of possibly eliminating the Twins, Expos, Marlins or Devil Rays most imprudent and unfortunate and the worst manner in which to begin the process of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement.

2001: Gold Glove Award winners are announced. Ivan Rodriguez wins his 10th straight to tie Johnny Bench for the most by a catcher, Greg Maddux wins his 12th straight to extend his National League record for pitchers, and Roberto Alomar wins for the 10th time, the most ever for a second baseman.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

New PoBO Scott Harris, in his introductory speech, told us that significant changes will be made. One can assume that it means both the organization overall as well as the roster.

Obviously, he would not have taken the job if he didn?t receive a commitment to be given the resources needed. Ilitch has already promised to pay for multiple extra executives not including the new PoBO position. And assuredly, he will also invest in any new technology and equipment as he has done in the past.

In terms of the roster, it is unclear how much Chris will spend this year. Last year, he wrote a check for $243 mill and very little of it paid off. He may be hesitant to invest a significant amount until he gets to know Harris better.

The Tigers have very little talent to trade. Their best hope resides in young pitchers. Potentially, Harris may also try to get out from under some of Al Avila?s bad contracts in order to free up some money.

All of this obviously will have an impact upon just how much the Tigers will be able to accomplish when it comes to next year?s roster and performance.

Taking all of this into account, how competitive should the Tigers be next year? What is realistic? How much can the roster be transformed?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

What level of performance should the Tigers be able to reach next year?

1. It will be a mop up/reset year, undoing previous mistakes and revamping the roster.

2. They need to finish around .500 .

3. They need to finish above .500 and show a competitive level.

It's the day after the World Series and the Detroit Tigers are making moves. Robin Lund, pitching coach at U of Iowa will be asst. pitching coach. There are ties to Chris Fetter.

Interesting, asst. pitching coach Juan Nieves still holds that slot. Will the Tigers have 2 of them or will there be some shuffling or re-imagining of that position?

It gets even better. The Detroit Tigers new asst. pitching coach, Robin Lund, was a professor in kinesiology where he worked in biomechanics. His research focused on improving athletic performance. As a college coach, he is credited with sending 7 of his pitchers to the majors.

November 7 in Tigers and mlb history:

1889: The Brotherhood and its backers meet to begin preliminary work on the organization of a Players League. The players believe "that the game can be played more fairly and its business conducted more intelligently under a plan which excludes everything arbitrary and un-American."

1928: The Boston Braves trade National League batting champion Rogers Hornsby to the Chicago Cubs for $200,000 and players Freddie Maguire (IF), Percy Jones (P), Lou Legett (C), Socks Seibold and P Bruce Cunningham. He will compile a .380 average with 39 home runs and 149 RBI. Braves owner-president Emil Fuchs also decides to be his own manager.

According to Celler, the Brooklyn Dodgers made a profit of 2.364 million dollars in the five-year period. The Dodgers' "loss" of $129,318 in 1950 included a $167,000 loss due to the promotion of the Brooklyn Dodgers professional football team. In his continuing investigation into antitrust violations, Celler says that evidence in his committee suggests altering the reserve clause in that it does limit players.

1964: The National League approves the move of the Milwaukee Braves to Atlanta but orders them to stay in Milwaukee for the 1965 season, in spite of poor attendance over the last two years. The Braves will eventually move to Atlanta in 1966.

1967: St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Orlando Cepeda becomes only the second National League player to unanimously win the MVP Award. Cepeda batted .325 with 25 home runs and 111 RBI in leading the Cardinals to the pennant. New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell swept the National League MVP voting in 1936.

1972: Cincinnati Reds catcher Johnny Bench, who posted a .270 average with 40 home runs and 125 RBI, wins the National League MVP Award for the second time in three years.

1973: New Jersey becomes the first state which allows girls to play on Little League baseball teams.

1978: In a controversial selection, Boston Red Sox outfielder Jim Rice is named American League Most Valuable Player over New York Yankees pitcher Ron Guidry. Rice led the AL in home runs (46), RBI (139), hits (213), triples and slugging percentage (.600), and became the first AL player to accumulate 400 total bases in a season since Joe DiMaggio in 1937, while Guidry posted a 25-3 record with 248 strikeouts and a 1.74 ERA for the pennant-winning Yankees.

MONDAY MUSINGS.
Totally Tigers

Throughout the week, there are so many smaller stories hitting the media. They may be bite-size, but often they are just as important as the headline-grabbing news. Sometimes, even more.

And that?s what brings me to today. A way to bring them out in the open and invite conversation about some of these subjects.

And that?s the plan for Mondays. Keeping track of these mighty little bits that hit my radar throughout the week and sharing them with you today because
I know one or more will also resonate with you. So, let?s kick off this week?s musings?

January 24: The 2023 Hall of Fame class will be announced during a live MLB Network broadcast at 6 p.m. ET. The ballot is revealed in November, votes are compiled, and the results are announced later during the offseason.

WINTER MEETINGS
December 5-8: Winter Meetings in San Diego. The Winter Meetings are often the busiest time of the offseason for trades and free agent signings. The meetings themselves are less the focus of attention than the ?Hot Stove? action surrounding the meetings.

December 7: Rule 5 Draft. By rule, players selected in the Rule 5 Draft must remain on their new team?s MLB roster all season in 2023, otherwise they must go through waivers and be offered back to their original team.

Last year?s Rule 5 Draft was canceled due to the owners? lockout, In the two years previous, the Tigers selected Victor Reyes and Akil Baddoo, who remain on the big league roster in Detroit.

INTERNATIONAL SIGNING PERIOD
January 15: The 2023 international signing period begins. Without an agreement to hold an international amateur draft, international amateur players may sign with any team, subject to individual team signing bonus limits. The signing period used to run from July 2nd to June 25th each year, but MLB and the MLBPA agreed to push the start of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 signing periods back to January because of the pandemic, and now the new January start is permanent. Here is MLB.com?s list of 2023?s top 30 international prospects.

ARBITRATION
We?ve mentioned that the date for teams to tender contracts to arbitration eligible players is November 18, 2022. Those not tendered become free agents, and those tendered an offer head down this path.

January 13: Salary Figures are exchanged between teams and arbitration-eligible players The two sides can agree to a contract of any size after filing salary figures, and the vast majority of arbitration-eligible players agree to a contract before the filing deadline. Matt Swartz and MLB Trade Rumors released their salary arbitration projections in October.

January 30 to February 17: Arbitration hearings. for players and teams who do not agree on a salary for the 2023 season. Each side states their case ? hearings can be contentious because the team essentially outlines the player?s shortcomings and explains why he deserves a lower salary than he believes ? and the three-person panel picks either the salary the player filed or the salary the team filed, not a compromise number. For the first time, if the parties agree on a salary without going to a hearing, the contract becomes guaranteed for the season.

PLAY BALL!
About February 14: Pitchers and catchers report to Spring training camps in Florida and Arizona. Each team sets their own reporting dates. Cactus League and Grapefruit League games begin on February 24, 2023

March 8-21: World Baseball Classic. The WBC returns next spring following a pandemic-related hiatus. The tournament expands to 20 teams this time around and games will be played in Taiwan, Japan, Miami, and Phoenix. No games in Southern California this year. Pool play begins March 8 in Taichung and the Championship Game will be held on March 21 in Miami.

March 30: Opening Day! All 30 clubs begin play on Opening Day. A more balanced schedule will be featured with fewer games within divisions and every team will play at least one series against every other team in both leagues in 2023.
