Dombrowski fired, Dumb Ass Al Avila Fired Now DD back to World Series

You wonder what if Mr. I had allowed Dombrowski to remake the Tigers roster post 2015? What the next 7 years would have looked like. He essentially remade BOS, won a WS, and now PHI is winning 55% of their games. DET post 2016 has won 38.5% of their games.
 
Detroit?s Next GM Might Be in the Dugout.

Detroit didn?t do much at the deadline. Trading Robbie Grossman to Atlanta in exchange for soon-to-turn 21-year-old pitching prospect Kris Anglin was the only move. Many fans expected more. A disgruntled fan base thought that Monday?s swap of an underachieving outfielder for a potential future asset would be the first of multiple deals for Al Avila?s underachieving team.

[Update/correction: The Tigers also traded reliever Michael Fulmer to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Sawyer Gipson-Long, a 24-year-old 2019 sixth-round pick who was pitching at the Double-A level.]

The extent to which the relative inactivity was an indictment of Avila is a matter of opinion. Rival executives almost assuredly weren?t knocking down the GM?s door with appealing offers, and making trades for the sake of making trades is eyewash. Placating fans by simply moving pieces around doesn?t move the needle in any meaningful direction.

With a record of 43-66 and baseball?s 24th-rated farm system, which direction the club is heading in is far less clear than it was a year ago. Much for that reason, it?s easy to see why many in Motown would like to see Avila kicked to the curb.

Not everything that has gone wrong ? and a lot has certainly gone wrong ? can be placed squarely on the Detroit GM?s shoulders. But while this year?s plethorae of injuries and disappointing performances were largely beyond his control, Avila is nonetheless the architect of what has been a sluggish rebuild. The idea that said rebuild is in need of a rebuild of its own may be a valid one.

Which brings us to the crux of the issue at hand: Who can right the ship?

If Avila isn?t the answer ? evidence is mounting against him ? would Tigers ownership be best-served by bringing in someone from the outside, or does a better choice exist within Detroit?s inner circle? Sam Menzin, one of the team?s three assistant GMs, is an intriguing possibility. So is Scott Bream, whose title is VP/Player Personnel.

And then there is A.J. Hinch. Now in his second year at the helm, Detroit?s analytically-inclined manager has front office experience on his resume, and it is believed that he aspires to one day become a general manager. Might Hinch make that transition without changing organizations? Don?t be surprised if he does. Al Avila?s replacement could very well be sitting in the Tigers dugout.

Any one of us could've done more with selling off that roster than AA did. Since then he's made maybe 2 deals he's clearly won. His drafting at the top has been okay I guess but when you are 24th overall in minors ranking after having a top 5 pick like 7 years in a row... well you are shit.

He got us to a WS and destroyed our farm system, destroyed Boston's farm and eventually will destroy Phillies system.

You just have to keep spending. That said his resume speaks for itself. It's much better than AA in every possible way.

He can at least negotiate trades with some level of success. AA is terrible at them.

Do you find it curious that the most interesting moments of this Tiger season had nothing to do with the actual games played? Miggy?s milestones?..Lou Whitaker?s number retirement??. and?.

?the firing of Al Avila.

Today, we?re moving on from the firing and we?ll take the first steps in discussing who should replace him.

And because we love our team, we?re going to compile what is called a ?white paper? and help Chris Ilitch out.

We?re starting with baby steps. We?re not naming names yet. We?re also not getting into specific things the new GM has to do.

You can?t get specific until you draft the parameters first.

Since this is Friday, I?ll start things off by listing my top 5 job qualities any new Tiger GM must possess. Then I?ll ask you to add to that list. Offer ONE general concept using 3 sentences or less.

And please, no specific issues yet. I know that 5,482 of you are dying to list ?broom the entire medical/training/conditioning staff.? You?ll need to hold off on that until next week when we dig deeper into the issues that must be addressed.

Today, we?re looking at the GM?s personal and professional qualities that should be required.

Without further adieu, let?s get started. We need to get this list to Chris asap.

Here are my TOP 5 personal/professional qualities of any new GM:

1.FRESH BLOOD.

Earlier this week, Chris Ilitch fired his GM, Al Avila.

Avila was hired by his father, Mike Ilitch, in 2015. Chris took over the team in 2017 upon his father?s passing. At that time, the roster was one of MLB?s oldest and the payroll was ranked as the 3rd highest and just $1 mill away from being #2. The Tigers had MLB?s highest operational expenses ? almost double that of the next team.

The Tigers also had been losing money almost every year for the last decade of Mr. I?s tenure. It was clear that some sort of rebuild was in order.

While often referred to as the owner, Chris is actually the Chair and CEO of the Tigers, which is held in a trust. That trust contains a number of family members who all have a say in how the organization is run.

It is worth considering that it would have taken Ilitch 1-2 years to become thoroughly familiar with how the Tigers were run under his father, especially the financial aspects and specific departments within the organization. That would have put the timeline for realistically starting to consider changes, including the GM position, at the 2018-2019 years. It was in this last year (July 2019) that he extended Avila to a contract of unknown length. Reports now peg that contract as running through the 2023 season.

The 2020 season complicated the baseball world due to Covid and resulted in a shortened season of only 60 games.

Logically, this timeline leaves the last 2 years (2021 and 2022) for Ilitch to fairly evaluate the work of his GM. Consider that Avila was given the task of tearing the team down that ran from 2017 through 2020 while also updating and improving analytics, the minor league system, player development and drafting, among the many issues. He had started to rebuild the roster in 2021 and 2022.

Now that Ilitch has fired Al Avila and indicated that changes are coming to the Tigers, what do you think about Chris now as it pertains to his leadership of this team?

Yesterday, I wrote about how the Tigers have started to mop up the mess created by Al Avila. The easy stuff has already begun but it will be up to the new GM to handle the more complicated issues.

Avila spent over $243 million on free agents alone this year and it was a major reason why he got fired. Chris Ilitch stated that he saw no improvement in the Tigers at the MLB level.

Today, here are the 5 biggest mistakes Avila made in signing players for the 2022 season. With 1 exception (Pineda), the remaining 4 signings are what the new GM will need to resolve if this team is to get better.

Considering that the Tigers have been rebuilding for 7 years, neither fans nor Chris Ilitch will expect this GM to simply sit by and wait for these contracts to expire. The expectation is that any new GM will have to move on either improving each player?s situation or attempting to trade them.
 
Dave Dombrowski has now won playoff series with 2 different franchises after idiotically being fired by Mike Illitch DET..well DET has one season above .500 since they fired him..
