Hey Michigan It's Your Turn

There's actually two other scandals going on right now at Michigan. one in the computer science and engineering department (link).

If these allegations are true, and they seem corroborated by multiple people, the University needs to cut ties with these clowns immediately.

and whoever created those ties needs to go as well.

And then this guy in the Public Health department, although from what I read, this is still playing out.

As I said in the other thread, this type of sick criminal behavior seems to be much more common than anyone wants to think and tolerated at PSU, OSU, MSU, the Boy Scouts, Catholic Priests, clergy in many other denominations, now Michigan. What the hell?

I agree this has probably happened at almost every university or organization. It's a sad situation that has many people that cover for these creeps. Not saying there was a cover up at Michigan but it seems like every instance it happens.

It makes me wonder how I made it through my childhood without falling prey to one of these creeps! I grew up catholic and went to a catholic summer camp. Most of the counselors were seminary students. Can't remember any problems or rumors, but damn!

From what I've read about these cases they (the abusers) typically, but not always, prey on kids who were poor & didn't have fathers.

So... odds are in your favor of making it through unscathed if you didn't have either strike against you.

Was reading the Freep today about these scandals at UM... sounds like they're all going to get a lot worse.

Supposedly the Athletic Department hired the one abuser to be team doctor AFTER the University hospital fired him for the same actions he's being accused of now. Unfuckingbelievable.

Michigan has done what they can in this situation, so far. They addressed the situation and put it in investigators hands before this got in the news. They are also walking the thin line as to not be sued by either side for taking a side. Because that would be stupid and jumping the gun as the girl, from the Nassar case, who voiced her opinion, already did. Cases like this dont take overnight to complete. They need more people to come forward with credibility and not just some story for headlines and attention.

They set up a hotline in the case of the athletic dept. team doctor.

Read the article. There are two other scandals, one in the music/drama dept., and another in the School of Public Health that - like it or not - are going to be lumped together and lead to the public question of whether UM had a systemic problem here, of bureaucratic inertia and deans covering their asses and refusing to investigate people they hired.

Oh, I didn't read that stuff. I was just going over this one case. Were these others getting their nuts felt, too or were they just hit on?

These are the accusers words he "heard" from a not named detective. He wasn't fired, it seems he was promoted from Student Health Services to Team Physician. At least, I take that as a promotion. It says "moved" in the article.

Ok, the detective is this West guy.

it doesn't happen in the Catholic Church or other faiths at any higher rate than it does in society at large. I can't recall the exact stat, if it was just LA or all of California or the country that kids are more likely to be sexually abused in the public school system than the Catholic church. The issue with the church isn't that it was occurring at a higher rate, it's the coverup that made it so much worse.

Edit: it gets covered up in the public school system as well, but they don't make for as good a villain in the popular press as the Catholic church does.

We had a pedophile at my son's pre-school busted by FBI/ICE as part of an international child porn sting. Guy had been accused TEN YEARS prior by a parent of a young girl (he preferred girls) but was never fired because, you know, "it could never happen here!" at a PRIVATE SCHOOL and all. Our son had already left for Kinder at that point and we had no plans to have him continue on to the private K-8 that was associated with the pre-school but parents to this day are still in denial about what happened.

The thing I will never forget is looking back when I'd see him at the school, the guy would avoid eye contact. Guess he was intimidated by adult men or something. The other thing I will never forget is speaking to the FBI and being asked if we wanted our son's likeness/picture to be run through the ICE database to see if he'd been ...circulated.

We declined, preferring not to know and moved on with our lives.

These issues are not limited to one or any institution or situation, it's everywhere and predatory people will always look for those most easy to prey upon. Fucking disgusting. All of it - Sandusky, Nassar - all of it.

well that and the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church and its piety and the fact that Catholic priests take a vow of celibacy. Plus, the number of public schools is exponentially massive compared to parochial Catholic schools/programs.

It's like saying Honda Accords are the "most stolen car in America" when in reality, there are shit tons of Honda Accords so statistically that makes sense.

the comparison between the Catholic church and the general population is "per capita" based, not totals. The car analogy is not really a good one.

Catholic priests may not molest kids at any higher rate than the general population. I think a better comparison would be a cop shooting an unarmed person vs. a regular citizen shooting someone. We are supposed to trust that the police aren't going to shoot us...just like catholic kids are supposed to trust a priest isn't going to molest them.

I don't know...it's all pretty sick

okay, that's fine and I don't have an axe to grind against the Catholic Church. The notoriety given to the scandals in the church are then more based on the celibacy and notion that Priests are 'better' than human and don't suffer 'human urges and needs.' That's really no different than the molestation in the Boy Scouts of America (recently declaring bankruptcy) or in coaching situations. In all these cases parents/adults are more trusting because they've been lead to believe they should be whereas in reality, it's even more ideal for predatory behavior.

And as a minister's kid, there is a LOT of ego with the Church - power trips. Priests of all denominations can manipulate the young and old and defenseless.

Ugh ...makes my skin crawl. There must be a special place in Hell for people like this.

Maybe you can google that for us?

Seems like this would've been more widely reported if true.
