According to a statement released by the athletic department Saturday night, the Wolverines have been following Big Ten testing and reporting protocals, but the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is taking a more stringent approach to the novel COVID-19 B.1.1.7 variant.

A source told The Daily that there were five confirmed cases of the new variant, with 15 more presumed positives throughout the athletic department. The novel strain was first introduced to Michigan at the beginning of the semester by a U-M athlete traveling from the United Kingdom. All members of the athletic department are expected to quarantine for 14 days.

They'll get to finish out the season, and are practically a lock for the tournament, while avoiding the risk the unknown strain posed for the department & every team.

I'm sure if he didn't pause sports, and the more virulent strain spread through the basketball team, you guys would be blaming him for that...


It is kind of insane someone would travel to the UK (or anywhere) right now, unless it was a matter of life and death.

I don't think "more virulent" is accurate

They could still have an outbreak after the pause

They paused for a possibility that will still be there after the pause

SOURCES: Michigan basketball won't play its Feb. 11 home game with Illinois, and the Wisconsin game Feb. 14 is up in the air. The first game back might be Feb. 18 at Rutgers.

Postponing. The players haven't done anything for two weeks but work out in their rooms. Would be a tall order to come back and play a game after being together only a couple days.

So if true, it sounds like the school is postponing so the players won't be rushed back and end up with injuries.

The home game vs Illinois has been officially postponed

Looks like they're planning on restarting with the road game @UW

Rescheduling games would be on a priority basis with the first priority apparently being facing each team at least once, so that would start with the home game against Illinois

Meanwhile, since the suspension of athletic activities, Michigan basketball has consistently risen in the rankings, now up to #3 only behind Gonzaga and Baylor.

How many more Michigan games need to be postponed until Michigan makes it up to #1 in the polls?

As it is, the pause could very well cost Michigan the big 10 title. OSU only has 4 losses and is playing great. They only play Michigan once and it's in Columbus

The big 10 title will be decided by winning %. It will be extremely difficult for Michigan to match the winning % of OSU. Michigan has a couple losses coming. I don't know if OSU does.

Read several articles today that said the b117 strain is now more widespread in Michigan than it was 2 weeks ago.

Michigan basketball restarted practice today.

It?s not exactly the same. Michigan doesn?t have to win the Big Ten regular season championship to win the big 10 tournament championship game.

Michigan doesn?t have to win the Big Ten regular season championship to win the NCAA championship.

The conference regular season championship in basketball is nowhere near as important as the conference championship game in football is.

Blasphemy! Blasphemy! Blasphemer! Heretic! Michigan is a basketball school now. Winning all the available championships is the unquestionable right of the Michigan basketball program. All championships are important and deserve to be won by Michigan.
