We mourn the passing of Jim Price, a treasured member of the Tigers organization for decades.

He spent all five years of his playing career wearing the Olde English ?D?, including the 1968 World Series championship season.

With Jim's passing, just 9 players are still with us from the '68 champs.

I never got tired of listening to Dan and Jim. Just like I loved Ernie and Paul, and Ernie with whoever helped him. I liked
Kaline and Kell on the tv broadcasts. I had forgotten he worked with Ernie and Jim also did some play by play in the late 1990?s..

Jim isms on the radio.

Yellow hammer
The Art of pitching
Racky Tack
Buggy whip
the tools of intelligence

Price ? known for his ?buggywhip? and ?yellowhammer? catch phrases ? called games alongside current broadcaster Dan Dickerson for more than two decades.

From Dickerson

This is such sad news,? Dickerson said in a statement. ?Jim and I were together for 24 seasons, and experienced both ends of the spectrum with our beloved Tigers ? from a tough season in the first year after Ernie retired, to two trips to the World Series. Jim helped get me through that first season, which made what happened three years later all the sweeter ? Every time I see a good curveball, I can?t help but think of Jim. I?m sure he won?t mind if I break out the occasional ?Yellowhammer? when I do. He will be missed.?

Jim?s famous ?Yellowhammer? -- his colorful description of a good breaking ball. Jim said it came from teammate Pat Dobson and was named after a bird. So one day, we looked it up -- and sure enough, a Yellowhammer is a bird that is known for its ability to sharply dart down and away, just like a good curveball.

Last night was pretty Nostalgic about the old tiger tv and radio broadcasters so I went back and watched game five of the 1968 World Series. Now George Kell was helping the NBC broadcast but I loved the way Kell calls a game. He did the mid to late innings play by play.
Great comeback against defending champs. Down 3-1 and down 3-0 after the top of the first in game five.

Watching Ernie Interview the tigers after game 7 in the clubhouse is a treat. Jim price gets up there and thanks all the fans back in Michigan. A true pro. Man I?m glad these are around because I just vaguely remember watching them. I really started to follow the tigers starting in late 68 and 1969.
My hatred of Baltimore started in 1969. Heart broken in 1972. Thought we could beat the A?s.

When did he leave the broadcast booth?

I had satellite radio in my car during the 60 game pandemic season, and I listened to most Tiger games called by Jim and ?Danny boy? in my car, driving around running my ?essential? business, defying every pandemic restriction that I could.
