Statistically, he is a borderline HOF player. That said, he should have been on the ballot much longer than he was. At least getting on this ballot gives him another chance.

Statistically to back in the years he played, hall of fame.

Whitaker, who played second base for the Tigers for 19 seasons, from 1977 through 1995, is one of nine players selected to the Modern Baseball Era (formerly known as the Veteran?s Committee) ballot.

My opinion after the players name;
He joins Dwight Evans, overrated with east coast bias
Steve Garvey (Michigan State), not enough for a 1B
Tommy John, I would vote for him with the longevity along with Jim Kaat
Don Mattingly, not enough numbers
Thurman Munson, tragically died in his prime would have been voted in long ago
Dale Murphy, not enough numbers
Dave Parker drugs will cost him
and Southfield native Ted Simmons. missed by one vote last go round.

Influential former executive director of the MLB Players? Association Marvin Miller is also on the ballot. The owners hated him.

Whitaker hopefully, and Simmons make it. maybe another.

from the Detnews
?Alongside fans from across the globe, all of us with the Detroit Tigers are thrilled to learn that Lou Whitaker has been named to the Modern Era Committee ballot,? read a statement from the Tigers. ??Sweet Lou? was an integral part of our 1984 World Series Championship team and is a key piece of the storied tradition of baseball in the Motor City.

?When the voting results are announced next month, we?re confident that all of us will be celebrating this Tigers? legend?s election to Cooperstown.?

Support for Whitaker?s induction into the Hall of Fame has been growing gradually over the last decade, his career gaining greater appreciation with a more new-age statistical examination of his production, especially compared to second basemen already enshrined.

Whitaker, for example, hit more home runs than Roberto Alomar (244 to 210). He had a higher career WAR than Craig Biggio (75.1 to 65.5). And he had a better OPS-plus than Ryne Sandberg (117 to 114). At the time he retired in 1995, Whitaker was one of three second baseman to post more than 1,000 runs, 1,000 RBIs, 2,000 hits and 200 home runs.

The others were Joe Morgan and Rogers Hornsby.

He was also the rookie of the year in 1978, won three Gold Gloves, four Silver Slugger Awards, was a five-time All-Star and, as was mentioned, was an invaluable cog in the Tigers? 1984 championship season.

Bill James, in his annual Baseball Handbook, called Whitaker the 13th greatest second basemen off all-time.

Yet, this is a player who received a paltry 2.9 percent of the vote in his only year on the ballot in 2001. His candidacy ? as well as the greatness of that 1984 team ? was illuminated further when teammates Jack Morris and Trammell were inducted off the Veteran?s Committee ballot in 2018.

Whitaker was among the Tigers? entourage in Cooperstown to celebrate their induction. Trammell, in his acceptance speech, made a heartfelt plea that Whitaker will one day join him in halls of the baseball museum at Cooperstown.

Seems only fitting that the longest running double-play combination in baseball history should be in there together.

The results will be announced prior to the Winter Meetings in San Diego, December 8.

imo,
If Lou does get the necessary votes, there will be many who will speak up for Bobby Grich as the next 2B man to be voted in.

Whitaker Rankings compared to other 2B

WAR = 7th (all 6 ahead in HoF, 16 have less and are in HoF)

Runs = 11th (all 10 ahead in HoF. 12 have less and are in HoF, finished 9th when retired)

HR = 11th (5 of 7 eligible ahead in HoF, finished 4th in HRs when he retired)

JAWS = 14th (9 of 10 eligible ahead in HoF, finished 10th when he retired)

RBI = 14th (10 of 12 eligible ahead in HoF, finished 9th in RBIs when he retired)

Doubles = 15th (11of13 eligible ahead in HoF, finished 10th when he retired)

Hits = 16th (12 of 14 eligible ahead in HoF. finished 10th when he retired and all ahead were in)

Whitaker was easily a top 10 2B of all time when he retired. Those ahead of him were already in the HoF. There are over a dozen 2B with less career stats already in the HoF.

Whitaker 75.1 WAR 56.5 JAWS 1386 R 244 HR 1084 RBI .789 OPS
Sandberg 68.0 WAR 57.5 JAWS 1318 R 282 HR 1061 RBI .795 OPS
Alomar 67.1 WAR 55.0 JAWS 1508 R 210 HR 1134 RBI .814 OPS
Biggio 57.2 WAR 53.7 JAWS 1844 R 291 HR 1175 RBI .796 OPS

FYI...2 names that aren't in and are in the listings is Jeff Kent and Bobby Grich.

The Modern Era Committee can reverse some Hall of Fame injustices.
Lou Whitaker, Thurman Munson, Ted Simmons, and Marvin Miller highlight the loaded list of candidates.

HOF candidates by rWAR;
Lou Whitaker 75.1
Dwight Evans 67.1
Tommy John 61.5
Ted Simmons 50.3
Dale Murphy 46.5
Thurman Munson 46.1
Don Mattingly 42.4
Dave Parker 40.1
Steve Garvey 38.1
This should not be a close call.
Lou belongs in the Hall.

Sweet Lou's 75.1 bWAR ranks 78th all time. He?s the only player on this year?s ballot in the top 100.

Lou Whitaker had a higher career WAR than Craig Biggio, more HRs than Roberto Alomar, and a better OPS+ than Ryne Sandberg. Despite that, he received just 2.9% of the vote in his only year on the ballot.

Whether leading off a game, or just leading off an inning, Lou Whitaker could be a catalyst.
Here?s how his leadoff numbers compare to his overall (.276/.363./.426/.789) slash line.

Should Lou Whitaker be voted into the Hall of Fame?

1. Yes, he and Tram should have gone in together.

2. Yes, his stats are just as good if not better than some second basemen already in the Hall.

3. Yes, there is no double play combination in the history of the sport like Tram and Lou.

4. No, the Hall of Fame is for great players, and Lou doesn't quailify.

5. No, Lou was a complement to Tram; only Tram deserved to be in.

6. He should have his number retired and a statue erected at Comerica, but no Hall of Fame.

7. Not sure.

8. Other - please explain.

Vote.

Lou Whitaker?s Hall of Fame case is undeniable: His adjusted OPS of 117 ranks ahead of Hall of Fame second basemen Roberto Alomar (116) and Ryne Sandberg (114) -- *and* Whitaker has the better Range Factor/9 IP than both Alomar and Sandberg. @Tigers @MLBNetwork

And fielding % Alomar .9838, Whitaker .9837. Sandberg was a bit higher. But they always said Alomar's defense, his defense, Alomar's defense.. Lol. And Whitaker matched him.
