Tigers 2023 Spring Training Thread

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

The World Baseball Classic starts next month and runs for 2 weeks. It is considered to be the baseball version of soccer?s World Cup. There will be 20 different countries playing.

Those MLB players who are participating will start spring training a little earlier than the rest of their teammates. Then they will leave their teams to play in the WBC. They will return earlier than March 21st should their team be eliminated.

This is considered to be a showcase for professional baseball and an honor to become a member of each country?s team. MLB team management generally leave the decision to participate to their players unless they see some real concerns.

The Tigers will have Javier Baez, Miguel Cabrera, Eduardo Rodriquez and Jonathan Schoop playing in the WBC. There are 4 other players also attending who are currently not on the official roster.

The advantages to playing means these 8 will be further along in their preparation for the MLB season. However, it could create more wear and tear for Miggy.

It is said that Javy Baez responds and plays much better on a big stage and in front of crowds. Some who know him believe that playing in the WBC will serve as a catalyst for his 2nd year with the Tigers.

Given the Tigers current situation where they are not expected to be competitive this year and when Scott Harris has invited 62 players to spring training, should these players be participating in the WBC?

Do the benefits for them and the entire team outweigh the negatives?

Is it a good idea for these Tigers to play in the WBC?

1. Yes.

2. No.

3. Depends upon the player.

the only one I really don't want playing in it would be Rodriquez. I want him healthy so he can be traded.

This season is going to be a shit show. Just hoping everyone stays healthy so we can find out what we have in some of these young guys and are they true building blocks or not.

Avila really pulled a Millen on this franchise. Going to take time to recover. At least Miggy comes off the books at the end of the year.

The Reds have agreed to terms with LHP Daniel Norris on a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training.

Casey Mize underwent surgery on his back last year, around same time as his Tommy John surgery. He has been cleared to begin a throwing progression this week, according to Tigers.

Jason Beck

Spencer Turnbull said he?s fully cleared for Spring Training. He threw a bullpen session a few days ago and will throw another on Friday. He could get some extra days between outings this spring but is ready to go.
