Tigers vs. mariners Game 162 October 5, 2022 - and offseason to 2023

Tigers/Mud Hens reliever Drew Carlton elected free agency this week.

The 32nd-round pick out of FSU has put up fantastic numbers in the minor leagues and got brief stints with the Tigers in 2021 and 2022.

The Detroit Tigers PoBO, Scott Harris, has already started addressing the roster. At his press conference last month, he said to expect significant changes.

Looking at the 2022 roster, the team appeared to have enough relief pitchers. But regarding starting pitching, currently the only active one signed beyond 2022 is Eduardo Rodriquez. There are a number of starters on the IL with only a couple potentially being able to come back in time for 2023.

If we address the infield, the Tigers are expected to make changes behind the plate and at third base.

First and second bases may be in need as well with changes being discussed internally. Only shortstop has a guaranteed player to fill it but then again there is talk of reassigning positions.

The outfield has only 1 guaranteed player ? Riley Greene ? with Akil Baddoo, Kerry Carpenter, Willi Castro, Austin Meadows and Victor Reyes fighting for 3 other spots.

How much should Harris remake the roster?

How many of the 2022 players deserve to stay?

How much does the organization want this team to progress?

Considering the 40 man roster, how many of these players should be cut?

How many players from the 40-man roster should be cut?

1. Less than 10

2. 10-15

3. 16-20

4. 21-25

5. 26-30

6. 31 or more

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you back in actual offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s topic??..

The playoffs are in full swing this year. A year in which significant changes were made to the format.
An additional wild card team was added to each league as well as a best of 3 series.

Meanwhile, the top teams sat around waiting until it was their turn while the underdogs had the advantage of being in ?playoff mode.?

What ended up happening is 3 teams that won over 100 games ? Braves, Dodgers and Mets ? were sent home early. There are concerns that the new format is unfair towards the top teams and give the lesser teams an edge in a short series.

The Padres finished 22 games out of first place while the Phillies ended up in 3rd place, 14 games out and won only 12 more games than they lost. Under the old rules, neither team would have been close to qualifying for the playoffs. But now they have moved deeper into the playoffs, having won significantly fewer games during the season but managing to pull off short series wins.

MLB?s reasons for the changes are simple. More teams, more interest, more excitement, more eyeballs, more tv, more money. They wanted to create an ?anything can happen? feeling and format, which is what happened.

But is it a good thing when a championship is no longer based upon the best teams?

Do you prefer a championship series that has more of a ?crapshoot? feeling to it?

Does the new playoff format now make how many games you win from April through September meaningless?

What do you think? Which system is the better one?
Which playoff system is the better one?

1. The former one (2021 and earlier).

2. The new one (2022).

There are rumors that the Tigers are discussing alterations to Comerica Park. It?s been an ongoing issue for years even after some fences were moved in 2003.

Players from all teams have complained over the years. And a recent study confirmed that Comerica leads all other MLB parks in ?lost HRs? ? fly balls that would have been home runs in all the other ballparks.

The issue revolves around the expanse on either side of deep centerfield called the power alleys. The measurements for those areas exceed all other ballparks.

Power alleys are where most home runs are hit but at Comerica, they often end up being fly balls.

Comerica was originally built to favor pitchers. But in turn, it also required that outfielders be strong defensively and speedy.

If the dimensions should be changed, it would help the team defensively as well as help boost offense. The Tigers play half their game at Comerica and they need every little bit of help they can get. Pitchers would still have an advantage, albeit not as much.

Should the Tigers reconfigure Comerica?s dimensions in order to modify the problematic power alleys?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
