Tigers vs. Mariners May 18, 2021 Game 42

Exciting as a no hitter is. This team is still 16-26 and not close to the playoffs yet sadly in year 5 of this rebuild.
I was Hoping they would be closer to .500 this year.

You can look at it as a positive for the future. The pitcher who threw the no-hitter has a 2.88 ERA and a WHIP of 0.96. He is under team control until 2025.

I'm a little excited about this, and I was all set to ignore baseball again this year

11:08 am just now seeing Turnbull no hitter last night. Well that was a complete unexpected surprise.

giving a catcher credit for a no hitter is similar to giving a father credit for the act of child birth. Sure, the father had something to do with it, but the mother deserves all of the credit. ;)

No its not.

Not even close.

Good catching can improve pitching in a macro sense. And, as I recall, Bruce Kimm was Fidrych's "catcher" in 1976.

And of, course, to rest my case, Billy Chapel insisted on Gus Sinski.

Tigers brass cannot continue a charade indefinitely.

The pandemic worked to their benefit due to no MiLB season last year, and a drastically reduced MLB season, so they can legit claim that it set back their efforts to improve the team this season.

The team that they field next year should be able to compete and win @ around .500 clip, otherwise they are just jerking our chains...nothing that we can do but wait and see.

Every once and awhile, I check the YT page that has Galarraga's 28 out PG, and read the comments, b/c even 11 years later, there are new posts on that travesty, that keeps an otherwise unremarkable former MLB pitcher out of the baseball record books.

That's it right there.. They stole this one moment from him.

No. A catcher deserves some credit and they get it just no one wants to talk to the C. I don't think it's relatable.

Some things to be happy about the no hitter and Turnbull is pitching well. Mize as well. Baddoo has hit a bit better lately after crashing. Last couple weeks .286 with 6 walks, 7 k's. A couple other things.

their top 3 pitchers have been good so far this year.

Boyd 2.45 ERA / 0.97 WHIP
Turnbull 2.88 ERA / 0.96 WHIP
Mize 3.69 ERA / 1.19 WHIP

Spencer Turnbull No-Hitter!
Key Stat: 83% First-Pitch Strikes -- Highest in any game of his career.

Working behind the plate tonight, Eric Haase became the first rookie in Tigers history to catch a no-hitter.
The last Major League rookie to catch a complete game no-hitter was Eli Whiteside on July 10, 2009.

RAPID FIRE.
Totally Tigers

How many of us were surprised to see the Tigers throw their first no-hitter in over a decade? Today, we honor Spencer Turnbull with our observations and thoughts. We?ve got 5 questions and only 2 sentences each to support our opinions. Make sure to share yours after reading today?s blog.

The Tigers allowed nine total hits during this week?s series at Seattle.
Per Elias Sports.

It?s the first time in franchise history that the Tigers have held an opponent to nine-or-fewer hits in a series of three-or-more games.

This game is when Spencer Turnbull pitched a No-Hitter.

good to check in on what's up with him. That said, I just looked at his career stats to remind me of what he really is.

The fact of the matter, he has 53 starts under his belt at the ML level. He has a 4.25 ERA and a 1.323 WHIP. My guess is he is just an average arm...#3 or #4 type pitcher. That said, it will be nice to get him back. If he pitches well next year he will probably be traded at the deadline.
