The Tigers have claimed RHP Seth Elledge off waivers from the New York Mets and optioned him to Triple A Toledo.
Elledge, who turns 27 in a few days, posted a 6.75 ERA with 10 walks and 15 strikeouts in 14.2 innings this season at the Triple-A level with the Braves and Mets.

To make room for Elledge on the 40-man roster, RHP Beau Brieske has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

ERod and Lange would be locks if the game was today. Greene has been on a tear tho too. Tork is coming around also.

The Dodgers helped our Tigers last night and can continue to do so tonight and tomorrow night.

Tigers are 19 and 21 after 40 games. Would You be happy with 76 wins and 84 losses up to 160 games with this team of Tigers at the end of the year?

Tigers 4 - Pirates 0: Just a good, smothering win.
The third nice start in a row from Michael Lorenzen paved the way for a relatively stress-free Tiger win.

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

On May 6th, Spencer Turnbull had another rough outing in his attempt to come back from Tommy John surgery. He currently has the team?s worst starting pitching stats including an ERA of 7.26.

It has been noted that after each start, he and manager A. J. Hinch sat down to discuss that outing. During his last start, he threw fastballs almost exclusively and ignored his other pitches. Hinch said publicly that it was not a move that MLB pitchers make and that appeared to be the final straw for management.

After that game, Harris, Hinch and Fetter met with Spencer and had a lengthy discussion covering their concerns and the goals that needed to be met. Considering that Spencer had an option remaining (while other potential candidates didn?t) and that Toledo had pitchers with better stats (with experience pitching in Detroit), it was decided that Turnbull would be sent down to work on regaining his form.

Turnbull did not reveal an injury to his neck that he allegedly had been hiding since early April. He only admitted the injury after their meeting and after he had made some phone calls. Three days after the meeting, he had fired his agent and hired Scott Boras.

Boras facilitated an exam that would put Turnbull on the IL instead of being demoted. The goal was to preserve his service time and to allow him to become a free agent after next year. At no point did anyone believe Detroit was manipulating service time given Turnbull?s poor outings.

The complete details and timeline of what happened is in yesterday?s blog may be found here:

Which now brings us to the question of what is best for a team vs. a player who is trying to maximize his earning potential.

Is it OK for a player to keep information secret that could potentially impact the success of his team? Is it OK for him to use strategies that would keep him on the roster even though the team had valid reasons for demoting him and had better options for replacing him?

Or, is it OK for a player to take whatever steps necessary to protect his own career and advance his future?

Do both sides have valid points? If so, which party should have priority? Are the needs of the team more important than the needs of 1 player?

As you consider which side to support, let?s set the parameters for your consideration:

A player is performing poorly.
The team has other options for replacing him.
There is no evidence that would support intentional service time manipulation.
Given these 3 factors, which side do you support the most in their actions?

1. When a team and a player are at odds, which side's decision do you support more?

2. The team?s strategy for putting the best product on the field takes precedence.

somehow the two choices were goofed up in the original post

This is probably not a popular answer, but I voted for the player in the scenario, when it comes to getting to free agency.

A fan but not a bigger fan. As far as LA I've disliked them since Nettles was playing lock down 3rd for the NYY.

I was confused in my younger years and I actually admit to liking the Dodgers then in my early-early 20s.

I lost that "affinity" in 1981, when they backed into the WS and beat NY in 6, with the last pitcher I faced in HS on the mound for the final FO8 to whomever no-name was in CF for LA (Dusty Scrubbs? Darby Simpleton? Jimmy Webb? Franklin Benjamin? John Flintstone? Ken Landreauxski? ).

Doesn't matter. My last PA off Howe, and in HS, was a sharp line-drive single to LF. I should have been at the plate for NY instead.

EDIT. Crap: Bob Welch, another Dodger pitcher I played against in HS, was on that team, too. We beat him 4-1. Maybe our Kimball HS 1974 Varsity (24-2) should have replaced the Yankees. Our uniforms also had pinstripes.
