Bruce Feldman at the Athletic (the guy who broke the Tucker to MSU story) is saying he's been told "there are some very influential people inside LSU who are really, really high on Mel Tucker."

Interesting.

Actual word out of LSU is Tucker isn't near the top of their list, but if they missed on their first several guys he might be a target. Word out of East Lansing is there are donors lined up already to pay whatever it would take to keep him. Tucker will probably parlay any real interest into more money for himself, his staff, and the facilities, like he should do.

that's not what Finebaum is reporting - he's saying LSU's new president has Tucker high on his list.

His career college coaching records are 5-7, 2-5, and 7-0... in the latter case without playing a single team with a winning record... three 2-4 teams, and a 2-3 FCS team.

Seems like as good a time as any to bounce...

He's showing promise but the jury is still out on the guy as a coach. I'd like him to stick around and prove himself but I wouldn't be surprised if he left.

the 2-5 doesn't count - he was a late hire taking over a dumpster fire of a team. The asterisks on the 7-0 have already been mentioned in another thread - definitely valid points. He's brought the program out of the basement but still has a lot to prove.

It's something to be concerned about, Vegas sportsbooks have him as the favorite to take the job. Odds are he doesn't but the books don't just pull names out of the air

MSU is extending Tucker and giving him a new deal. Will be signed soon and announced as early as next week. Tucker's going to get paid! He was already well paid, probably will have top 5 money now.

that's insane. I like him so far but the jury is still out on the guy - even Brady Hoke had a good year. I know the circumstances are different but this seems like jumping the gun a bit. What was the term of his original deal?

Firing Barnett and probably Hazelton too would be worthy of a raise - I think any Spartan fan would be relieved to have a coach willing to make necessary staff changes - but extending him this early on could bite the school in the ass pretty hard.

97.1 reporting "sources" say it's a $7M a year as a base pay deal with incentives to get it to $8M a year. Puts him about 7th or 8th in coaching salaries.

Not to mention, they're building a $50M practice facility custom for Tucker.

Been in the works for a while, good to hear, MSU knows how the game is played now and we have multiple $billionaires backing the football program right now.

this is not good news - for MSU or college sports in general.

I think this extensions is based more on what he's doing behind the scenes than being 8-1. Tucker is the real deal. I think the thought is that Tucker is the next big thing and you lock him up for as long as you can because the NFL is his final destination.

Hazleton is not going anywhere, the DB problems have to do with injuries more than anything else, we literally don't have a single healthy cornerback on the roster, we're playing a 5-8 walk on right now. Lowery is out. Williams has a bad back and is barely playing. Gervin transferred. Kimbrough has a bad leg, but is still trying. And now Brantley is out for the season. Krump is out for the year. If Williams and Kimbrough are closer to 100%, it's a totally different secondary.

It was either extend Tucker, or start over, the LSU interest was real and he would have been on a plane to Baton Rouge before the Big Ten Championship game. You retain talent by paying for what they'll be worth. MSU not only has a ton of Big Ten money right now, they have a couple $billionaire alums backing their sports programs, money is not an object right now. MSU is making the same types of investments in football right now that Clemson started making about 12 years ago. No one is going to outbid MSu Football right now.

MSU in a tough spot with Tucker.

1. Do nothing and he walks....almost certainly. You risk losing a coach that is seen as the next "big thing" because they weren't CERTAIN he was the real deal. That would be a tough pill to swallow AGAIN (Nick Saban).

2. Pay him. Keep him in East Lansing and ride the wave. Maybe it crashes, maybe not. He seems to be really good at bringing in talent. NOBODY expected this team to be this good this soon. Things like that rarely happen by accident. Tuck didn't take over a team on the rise or with an abundance of talent that just needed some solid coaching.

MSU chose option 2. I think it's the right choice. I HATE that college football is becoming (has been for years, just seems like the last 2 have really ramped it up) nothing more than a bidding war for players.....HUGE salaries.....HUGE pockets from alumni......but it is what it is. You either get on the train or let it fly by you.

MSU just hopped aboard.

CHOOO CHOOOO MOTHER FUCKERS!!!! TUCK COMIN!!!

These salaries are crazy. Tucker should write a book on how to use the transfer portal. Wish my dumb coach would watch and learn.

It would be really unlike Mel Tucker to jump jobs after a season or two for a higher paycheck... you guys have no reason to worry
