Whitey was very adept as a doctor, too. His patients, namely baseballs, were objects of his surgical skill with his thumbnails, belt buckle, wedding ring, saliva, mud, and a patented baby oil-turpentine-rosin mixture he kept close by.

Elston Howard was his helpful nurse by using his expertise of finding a way to have the ball scrape a sharp loose and bent up grommet on his shinguard before throwing the ball back to Whitey.
