We need to get Miller...

I am hearing that Miller is going to get paid. They were talking $9-$10M per year type money. I really don't see the Tigers going that high for another relief pitcher.

Plus I hear he's being shopped as a closer (for closer money), how many closers do we need on this team anyways?

lol....It would be nice if they had ONE good one!

They don't need a good one, just an average one.

The difference between an average closer and an elite closer is maybe 1-2 wins a year. Tops!

The point is that not all closers are good relievers in none closer roles. DET lacks the reliever that can come in and get guys out with runners on base. Closers generally enter the game in the 9th inning with no one on. Most get a save while coming in with 2 or more run leads.

The best relievers are generally failed starters, either at the majors or minors. Why focus on closers?

Because Nathan sucks!

Way to take that out of context.

The point I was making is that DD is pursuing ex-closers or closers in general. And the rhetorical question is again...."Why focus on closers?"

I thought you were asking me why we were focusing on closers...not why DD is focusing on them.

OK....so Nathan sucks. And who kept using him in that role even after DET traded for Soria?

Nathan
Soria
Johnson
Hanrahan

All were GOOD closers at one time and all became Tigers in 2014. How has that worked for the Tigers <sarcasm>?

I think DD has done a shitty job putting this team together...especially the pen.

I agree with rebbiv.

Maybe a few of those 10 mlb ready pitchers down on the farm can get it done... Trade pieces would be Price and Avila. Kinsler too but he did play very well defensively and we have no one to replace him.

Trade pieces should be Kinsler and/or Castellanos. Perez can play 2B if it means getting a legitimate corner OFer.

Would you rather have Price or Scherzer? I think Price gets you that corner OF. I think you try and sign one of the two

I don't think it is an either/or proposition. We already control Price for another year. But be that as it is, paying $16 Mil for an average to slightly above average 2B is not good value. Castellanos may/might turn out to be an above average hitter, but he will never be above average anywhere defensively. He is destined to be a DH-type and and we are set there for the next 4 years at least. Castellanos + Kinsler = a decent corner OFer, especially if we offset Kinsler's salary and/or take on some other salary (i.e. Matt Kemp).

Do you think the Dodger's could use Kinsler and Castellanos? I do. Dee Gordon could move back to SS. We might have to take Alex Guerrero along with Kemp.

Price, Sanchez, Verlander, Porcello and Lobstein for starters in 2015. Why would we need Scherzer? We can still resign Price if need be and at least give him a Qualifying Offer at the end of 2015.

So you would want to add Kemp at $21.5M per year until 2019 for Kinsler and Nick? That doesn't make sense to me. Over the last 3 seasons he has a negative WAA and only a +4.0 WAR.

Kemp is a top 15 offensive player. His WAA and/or WAR are flawed and incorporates his defense. The vast majority of Kemp's playing time has come from CF, where is the worst. DET would put him in one of the corner spots, preferably RF, and his lack of defense would be no different than J.D. Martinez'.

Again, trade Kinsler's $16 Mil for average 2B production for Kemp's $21 Mil above average corner OF production. You don't see the benefit?

Add to the fact Castellanos was the worst 3B in the MLB, hands down. His improvement on offense will never make him better than an average position player (above average DH maybe). He would have to develop into a top 15 type offensive player, and that IS NOT what he projects to be.

You cannot take on salary like Kemp's without voiding of salary someplace else. We voided Fielder and took on Kinsler, plus $30 Mil to Tex. If we can trade Kinsler to LAD with Castellanos and got Kemp, Guerrero and $30 Mil, what isn't there to like. This trade works for both sides.

oh...you didn't say anything about Kemp +$30M for Nick and Kinsler. That would make it more palatable.
