The latissimus dorsi is the broadest muscle of the back. Simply, the lat is an accelerator muscle for pitchers, connecting the lower body to the upper body to allow for force transfer that leads to arm speed and ball velocity.

New York Mets star pitcher Noah Syndergaard suffered a lat strain last season, and began his rehab assignment about five months after going on the disabled list.

Perez (6-foot-3, 197 pounds) is widely regarded as the Tigers' top prospect. He ranked 35th among the top-100 prospects by Baseball America in January.
He split time between High-A and Double-A last season and went 6-3 with a 3.02 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings.

Tigers prospect Matt Manning suffers low level oblique strain.
The injury won’t set the pitcher back too long.
