Coaching Staffs.

Mike Rabelo and Andrew Graham will return as managers in the Detroit Tigers minor-league system, the club announced.

The list of minor-league coaching assignments was released Tuesday.
Many of the assignments have been previously announced or reported.

Triple-A Toledo: Manager Tom Prince will take over for Doug Mientkiewicz, who was not retained for 2020. Pitching coach Juan Nieves and hitting coach Mike Hessman are back for the second season with the Mud Hens.

Double-A Erie: Mike Rabelo will return for his second season at the helm. He previously managed at Lakeland, West Michigan and Connecticut. Mark Johnson returns for his second season as pitching coach. Adam Melhuse is the new hitting coach, replacing Brian Harper. Melhuse was previously a coach in the Los Angeles Dodgers system.

Class A (advanced) Lakeland: Andrew Graham returns for his second consecutive season at Lakeland and third overall. He has been in the Tigers system since 2010 and has previously managed at Connecticut, West Michigan and Erie. Pitching coach Jorge Cordova will return for a second season. He was previously pitching coach at West Michigan. Bill Springman, who was hitting coach in Connecticut in 2019, will be the Flying Tigers? hitting coach in 2020. He replaces Tim Garland, who will now be a coach in the Gulf Coast League.

Class A West Michigan: Brayan Pena will take the helm of the Whitecaps after previously managing in rookie ball and Connecticut. Former manager Lance Parrish will move into a front office role. Willie Blair will return as pitching coach for a second year. John Murrian is the new hitting coach, replacing John Vander Wal. Murrian, who spent six years as Tigers bullpen catcher, was a hitting coach in the Gulf Coast League in 2019.

The Detroit Tigers took Rony Garcia with the first pick of Thursday?s Rule-5 draft. More projection than results at this point of his young career, the 21-year-old right-hander logged a 4.01 ERA this year between high-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton. He was originally signed by the Yankees out of the Dominican Republic, in 2015.

Following the selection, Tigers VP of Player Development Dave Littlefield fielded questions from a small group of reporters. He described Garcia as ?a good-sized kid with a good arm, a four-pitch pitcher? not overpowering staff, but good command and good pitchability.? (Eric Longenhagen wrote him up here.)

I asked if the decision to take Garcia was influenced more by scouting or analytics.

?It?s always a blend,? Littlefield replied. ?Al Avila, our general manager, speaks of that often. That?s really how we make a lot of decisions in that regard.?

I followed up by asking if any tweaks to Garcia?s pitching package are planned.

?We certainly looked at the repertoire, the usage patterns, and those sorts of things,? said Littlefield. ?I think it would be a little bold to start making any decisions at this point. Obviously we?d like to get our hands on him and have the pitching people work with him. But we?ll be doing a lot of work leading into spring training, breaking down the breakdown of his pitches, to get a stronger feeling.?
