Joakim Soria on "probably the worst outing of my career."
Soria: "I don?t want to make excuses ? seems like everything I throw, they were on it."
Soria: "You just try to shake that from my head, try to come back tomorrow, and be better."
Soria: "Health-wise, I feel OK, but ... it was probably one of the worst outing of my career. Just try to shake that off, and go from there".

Castellanos: I wasn't so much worried about the at-bats because I can figure out a way to grind out my at-bats.
Castellanos: It was more of the catching and throwing to first, putting pressure on the baseball, that was the issue.
Castellanos: The trainers did a great job, my finger feels a lot better. I plan to be ready to go tomorrow.

July 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1917: The Tigers' Ty Cobb, Bobby Veach, and Ossie Vitt follow each other in the lineup, each going 5 for 5 in a 16 - 4 win over Washington. Having three players collect five hits ties the major-league record for the century. Cobb also scores five times.

1936: The Yankees, with Jake Powell back in CF for the injured Myril Hoag, drop a 5 - 4 decision to Detroit. On August 1st, Powell will go to LF, with Joe DiMaggio playing CF for the first time. George Selkirk will return to RF. The Yanks loses today when Charlie Gehringer ties the match with a two-run homer in the 8th. Bill Dickey allows a ball to get by him in the 10th and Jack Burns scores the winner. Schoolboy Rowe pitches 10 innings for the win over Johnny Broaca.

1938: Hank Greenberg ties a Babe Ruth record with his ninth home run of the week.

1939 Hank Greenberg scores five runs in a game for the only time, helping the Tigers pummel the A?s 14-0.

1951: Joe DiMaggio makes a rare mental error against Detroit, catching a Steve Souchock fly ball in deep CF and, thinking it's the third out, begins trotting in. It's only the second out, and George Kell scores from second base to make the score 4 - 2 in the eighth. Despite the lapse, the Yanks win, 5 - 4, with DiMag knocking in the winning run in the ninth.

1951: Ty Cobb testifies in front of Congress denying the reserve clause makes 'peons' out of baseball players.

1961 - Al Kaline?s longest hitting streak peaks today at 22 games. 31 for 84 .369, 22 Runs, 9 2B, 4 Hr's, 10 RBI.

1994: Detroit defeats Oakland 14 - 2, as Tiger C Chad Kreuter ties a major league record with three sacrifice flies. He is the 9th player in history to perform the feat.

2008: The Yankees, seeking catching help after losing Jorge Posada for the remainder of the season, acquire Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers for Kyle Farnsworth.

2010: One of the players traded yesterday makes a splash in his debut for his new team. Starting at 3B for the Tigers, Jhonny Peralta homers twice over the Green Monster as Detroit defeats Boston 6 - 5 withstanding a late-game grand slam by David Ortiz. Armando Galarraga's run of bad luck continues as he is hit on the ankle by a line drive off the bat of Kevin Youkilis with a 4 - 1 lead, and has to leave the game one out shy of qualifying for the win. Rookie Robbie Weinhardt relieves him and picks up his first major league victory.

2011: The Tigers get Ps Doug Fister and David Pauley from the Mariners.

2013: Today's deals are highlighted by a three-team trade that sees P Jake Peavy go from the White Sox to the Red Sox; Boston then sends rookie SS Jose Iglesias to Detroit, which is looking for insurance at the position in fear that starter Jhonny Peralta will be suspended as a result of the Biogenesis scandal. Detroit completes the deal by sending young OF Avisail Garcia to Chicago, while four other players change uniforms as well.

Castellanos, Suarez nicked up, forced out of action.
DETROIT -- Two rookies comprise the left side of Detroit's infield in third baseman Nick Castellanos and shortstop Eugenio Suarez. Both were injured Tuesday night and had to be removed from the game -- in Castellanos' case, before it even began.

Castellanos took a grounder off his right index finger during batting practice, causing a contusion that needed to be drained.

"Don't think it's anything serious," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of Castellanos' injury. "It was a little sore. ... Just took the safe route and got him out of there.

"Nick probably could've played, if he was forced to. It's not a big concern."

Suarez's injury, which is being called lower back soreness, became worse in the third inning when he bent down to field a grounder. Suarez made a throwing error after fielding the ball.

He originally aggravated his back, feeling a "pinch," as he described it, on Alexei Ramirez's first-inning groundout. Suarez exited the game in the fourth inning, when Andrew Romine pinch-hit for him.

"I will try to play tomorrow," said Suarez, who is listed as day to day. "Right now, it hurts a little bit."

Nine last minute trades.
Baseball Prospectus

5. Tigers acquire Stephen Drew and Andrew Miller from the Red Sox
The Detroit Tigers are currently 57-45 with a five-game lead over the Royals for the AL Central crown. They have a 90.6 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to our own odds, and they have the type of balanced lineup and star power on the mound to make a deep run once they get there.

But while the Tigers do a lot of things well, they do not have a very good bullpen. In fact, their 4.33 bullpen ERA is the fifth-worst in baseball, and it?s four-10ths of a run worse than that of the next-worst team, the Phillies. Joba Chamberlain has been quite good, Al Alburquerque has been ok and the team recently traded for Joakim Soria, so there?s some reason for optimism. But Joe Nathan?s performance can best be summed up by this visual approximation, and the only southpaw options in Detroit?s bullpen are Phil Coke, Ian Krol, and Blaine Hardy.

Adding Miller, a former Tiger, back into the fray would give the Tigers a pretty ferocious three-headed monster at the back of their bullpen, and would allow Detroit to neutralize left-handed power hitters come October. Lefties are hitting just .153/.210/.224 against Miller this year, and he has been dominant against right-handers, too.

Drew, meanwhile, gives the Tigers a plus defensive shortstop who?s still probably an above-average hitter (when you adjust for position) against right-handers. He can platoon with Eugenio Suarez, or may eventually come to supplant him if Detroit values his postseason experience.

Acquiring a left-handed setup man and a platoon middle infielder may not be flashy, but it?s the type of peripheral move that could pay massive dividends once the Tigers reach the postseason.
