Ausmus on Soria: Probably pick up a ball this week/weekend, I don't expect him to miss much more than allotted 15 days.

David Price just confirmed that he has not had conversations with the Tigers about a long-term contract as of yet.

Tigers will wait to see how Justin Verlander feels Wednesday before determining whether he can throw a bullpen Wednesday or Thursday.

Dirks' rehab derailed again by hamstring issue.
Tigers left fielder Andy Dirks, who had just restarted his rehab from back surgery after a left hamstring strain, re-injured the hamstring and was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, manager Brad Ausmus said before the series opener against the Rays.

The hamstring strain had already put Dirks' rehab on hold once, and Ausmus said the new injury makes it difficult to count on Dirks making a return this year.
"Depending on how that hamstring is, yeah. I don't want to write him off, but it'd be tough at this point," Ausmus said.

Ausmus said he didn't think he had ever been in a comparable situation to Dirks' during his 18-year Major League playing career. All he could remember was surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back in 2010, his final season, after which he said he went through a short rehab stint and returned to the big leagues.

Still, Ausmus felt for his injured outfielder.
"I'm sure it's been extremely boring and grueling for him," Ausmus said.

Justin Verlander aiming for Saturday return.

Verlander positive about his throwing session.
After throwing for the first time since being diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation about a week ago, Justin Verlander's initial report was positive.
The Tigers' right-hander said he felt good after spending 10-15 minutes throwing from about 60 feet in the Tropicana Field outfield before Tuesday's series opener against the Rays.
"Definitely felt a whole lot better," Verlander said. "There wasn't that 'can't get loose' feeling. As far as shoulder joint mobility and getting loose, I felt much better."

Verlander said that he "worked past the stage where it would've really started bothering me." He said before Tuesday that he could only throw softly without his shoulder starting to bother him. But Verlander didn't feel that way at The Trop, which he said was a positive sign.

Verlander missed his last start, but he is hoping to make his next turn in the rotation, which would be on Saturday in Minnesota, and avoid the disabled list.

"The ultimate decision on when he starts wouldn't be until after a bullpen [session]," manager Brad Ausmus said. "But we still have one more step before that, and that's how he feels tomorrow."

If Verlander still feels good on Wednesday, he could throw the bullpen session on Thursday.
"It'll either be Thursday, or no bullpen and just pray that I have a decent feel on Saturday," Verlander said.

Last week, an MRI on Verlander's shoulder had shown inflammation but no structural damage. He sent the scans out to three other doctors for second opinions, and all confirmed the original diagnosis. Verlander said a DL stint hasn't crossed his mind.

"I'm really thankful that, knock on wood, I might not have to go on the DL," Verlander said, pounding on his locker at The Trop. "Obviously, I want to get back, especially with Anibal [Sanchez] on the DL. Hopefully, I'll only miss one time through."

Reliever Joakim Soria, who has been dealing with a left oblique strain, threw on Tuesday, but he "still felt it a little bit," Ausmus said. As a result, the Tigers will "just continue treatment."

Tigers 'still in the mix' for Rusney Castillo.
from bybtb

The problem is that Castillo hasn't played in a game since late 2012. That's a long layoff. Scouts watched him perform, but game situations are obviously different. Some scouts believe he can join a major league roster quickly -- possibly right now. But it seems a stretch to think he can go from practice to a postseason race -- or even playing in the postseason. But then again, we haven't seen him and we're not scouts. So who knows.
