July 22 in Tigers and mlb history:

1909: For the first of four times in his career, Ty Cobb steals second base, third, and home in an inning, doing it in the 7th against Red Sox pitcher Harry Wolter. It is also Ty's first swipe of home in his career, Ty will steal home a total of 54 times. The Tigers beat Boston 6 - 0.

1923 - Walter Johnson notches his 3,000th strikeout on the way to 3,508. He fans five in beating Cleveland, 3 - 1. The next pitcher to reach 3000 Ks will be Bob Gibson, in 1974.

1941 - Dick Wakefield becomes baseball's first "bonus baby" when he signs with the Tigers for $52,000 and a new car. The University of Michigan standout will hit .143 in seven at-bat this season but will eventually turn into a solid outfielder batting .293 over parts of 9 seasons.

1952 - Detroit's Virgil Trucks gives up one hit in beating Washington 1 - 0.

1956 - The Hall of Fame announces special rules governing elections. Writers should vote every two years, alternating with the Veterans Committee; because of criticism, this will revert back in 1962. To be eligible, players must have been retired for five years.

1969 - For the first time, the All-Star Game is postponed due to rain.

1993: Kansas City's Greg Gagne hits a home run off Detroit's Mark Leiter in the Royals' 12 - 6 victory. The home run is the 10,000th hit in the long history of Tiger Stadium, making it the first ballpark to reach that figure. During the game, Detroit 3B Travis Fryman draws a walk off KC P Enrique Burgos, then proceeds to circle the bases on three wild pitches by Burgos.

2012: The Tigers complete a three-game sweep of the White Sox with a 6 - 4 win at Comerica Park. They score all of their runs on four homers off Philip Humber in the first 3 innings; two of the homers are by Miguel Cabrera, including the 300th of his career on a huge blast to center field in the 3rd inning. Jacob Turner is the winner, earning his first major league victory. The Tigers have won 16 of their last 21 to move 1 1/2 games ahead of the Sox in the AL Central.

from baseball reference

Tigers' Ian Kinsler: Reaches 20 homers for first time in five seasons.
Kinsler joined the 20-homer club Thursday, going 3-for-4 with a solo shot in a rain-shortened win over the White Sox.

A 20-homer man three times in his first six seasons, Kinsler had failed to reach that mark in four consecutive campaigns coming into this year, but he's gotten there bright and early this time around. If the ball is juiced now, as some observers have speculated, it's certainly been to Kinsler's benefit. He's in the midst of his most well-rounded offensive season yet.

Tigers' J.D. Martinez: May begin rehab as designated hitter.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that Martinez might begin a rehab assignment as just a designated hitter, due to his inability to throw without pain. Martinez got some swings in the batting cage on Thursday, as the pain doesn't bother him when he hits. He will get rehab at-bats as a designated hitter until he is able to throw pain-free. This will hopefully get him back in Detroit sooner as the Tigers head begin their stretch run. The Tigers will continue to do everything they can to get Martinez back on the field as soon as possible without jeopardizing his health.

Tigers' Jordan Zimmermann: Will play in rehab game Sunday.
Zimmermann (neck) completed another bullpen session Thursday and will make a rehab start Sunday for Triple-A Toledo barring any setbacks, MLB.com's Jason Beck reports.
Zimmermann landed on the DL in early July and has continued to make progress with his neck strain since. After he completes his rehab start Sunday, he could return to the team at some point next week as the chase for the playoffs begin to ramp up.
