October 30 in Tigers and mlb history:

1945 - Branch Rickey signs black players Jackie Robinson and John Wright to a contract with Triple-A Montreal of the International League for 1946. It is the beginning of integration.

1963 - Sandy Koufax wins again. The Dodgers pitcher, who finished with 25 victories and 11 shutouts, outpolls Cardinals shortstop Dick Groat, 237 to 190, for the National League MVP Award. Six days ago, Koufax unanimously won the Cy Young Award.

1984 - Willie Hernandez of the Detroit Tigers wins the 1984 American League Cy Young Award, edging fellow reliever Dan Quisenberry of the Kansas City Royals. Hernandez posted a 9-3 record with 32 saves and a 1.92 ERA. Hernandez becomes only the third reliever to win the Award.

1961 - A federal judge rules that Birmingham, Alabama laws against integrated playing fields are illegal, eliminating the last barrier against integration in the Southern Association. The circuit will choose to disband rather than abide the ruling and will be replaced in 1964 by the integrated Southern League.

1979, the Tigers acquire veteran infielder Richie Hebner from the New York Mets for Phil Mankowski and Jerry Morales. Hebner fills in at third and first base in 2 ? seasons with Detroit, driving in 82 runs in his first year with the club.
