1845: Alexander Cartwright presents the first set of baseball rules, 20 in total.

1907: At Washington Park, Christy Mathewson tops Jim Pastorius, 2 - 1, striking out 11 Superbas batters.

1909: Ty Cobb clinches the American League home run title with his 9th round-tripper. It is an inside-the-park drive against the Browns. In fact, all his nine home runs this season are inside-the-park, including two on July 15th. Only Sam Crawford (12 in 1901) has hit more inside-the-park homers in a year than Cobb.

1922: The Browns announce that George Sisler has severely strained ligaments and cannot lift his right arm over his head. He might be out for the remainder of the season, jeopardizing the Browns' pennant chances and Sisler's 39-game hitting streak. Ironically, the injury occurred when Sisler tried to catch a throw on a hit by Ty Cobb, whose streak he is trying to break. Without Sisler, the Browns rally to beat the Tigers, 8 - 6. Baby Doll Jacobson, playing 1B, makes two errors.

1924: Brooklyn's Dazzy Vance shuts out the Reds, 2 - 0, for his 14th win in a row.

1925: Brooklyn's Dazzy Vance narrowly misses back-to-back no-hitters over Philadelphia, pitching a 10 - 1 no-hitter five days after a 1 - 0 one-hitter. The Phils' lone run is scored by Chicken Hawks, who reaches second base on an error. Five days earlier it was Hawks' 2nd-inning single that ruined Vance's no-hitter. On June 17, 1923, Vance lost a no-hitter with two out in the 9th. In the second game, the Phils win, 7 - 3, behind Hawks' grand slam.

1927: Babe Ruth hits two home runs, to bring his season's total to 52, and the Yankees win a pair from Cleveland to clinch the American League pennant with a 98-41 record and 17-game lead. It is Miller Huggins' fifth pennant, tying him with Connie Mack.

1934: With his fiancee, Edna Mae Skinner of Oklahoma, watching, Schoolboy Rowe halts the Tiger skid with a 2 - 0 win over Washington. He asks in a radio interview: "How'm I doing, Edna?"

1934: Lefty Gomez pitches a 3-hitter against the Indians for his 25th win.

1934: Judge Landis sells the World Series broadcast rights to the Ford Motor Company for $100,000. Previously no fee had been charged.

1936: The Cardinals and Giants split a doubleheader at the Polo Grounds before 64,417, the largest crowd in the 60-year history of the National League.

1936: Indians teenage pitching phenom Bob Feller ties the major league record and sets a new American League record by striking out 17 batters as he two-hits the A's, 5 - 2. After the season, "Bullet Bob" will return to his Van Meter, Iowa home to graduate from high school.

1938: A special committee names Alexander Cartwright to Baseball's Hall of Fame for originating the sport's basic concepts. Henry Chadwick, inventor of the box score and the first baseball writer, is also honored.

1946: Joe DiMaggio's 2-run home run off Hal Newhouser gives the Yankees the 5-4 win, eliminating the Tigers and delivering the pennant to Boston. Here's a great shot of DiMaggio sliding into third at Briggs Stadium on a different play.

1946: The Boston Red Sox clinch the American League pennant, edging the Cleveland Indians, 1 - 0, on Ted Williams' inside-the-park home run, the only one of his career. Williams punches the ball over the shift when LF Fat Pat Seerey pulls in behind the SS position. The Boston margin at the season's end will be 12 games.

1948: The Philadelphia Phillies selected Hal Wagner off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1949: Schoolboy Rowe makes his last career appearance, with the Phillies in Pittsburgh. Tied the American League record for consecutive wins with 16 for the Tigers in 1934.

1949: For the second time in his career, Ralph Kiner hits home runs in 4 consecutive at-bats, over 2 games. He performed the same feat in 1947. The 2 homers today are numbers 33 and 34 for the season. Kiner's 1949 total will include 25 on the road, 29 at Forbes Field, 14 of them in the bullpen enclosure still known as Greenberg Gardens (which will become known as Kiner Korner).

1951: Yankees leadoff hitter Mickey Mantle drives a Virgil Trucks pitch deep into the RF upper deck to start the Yankee scoring. Witnesses say that if Mantle had hit it more to CF, the ball would have traveled 600 feet. Mantle then K's three times, as Trucks drives over New York for a 9 - 2 Detroit win. Trucks adds a pair of RBIs.

1954: Redlegs slugger Ted Kluszewski scores a run in a 6 - 5 loss to the Pirates. Big Klu has scored in 17 consecutive games, a modern record.

1958: The Braves' Warren Spahn becomes the first lefty to win 20 or more games nine times, as he beats St. Louis, 8 - 2. Eddie Plank and Lefty Grove each won 20 games eight times.

1960: Nellie Fox hits a 2-out home run in the 11th to give the visiting White Sox a 6 - 5 win over the Senators. It is Nellie's 2nd home run of the year.

1964: St. Louis becomes the first National League club to score in each inning since the Giants did it on June 1, 1923. They coast, 15 - 2, at Wrigley Field with Curt Simmons improving his record to 15-9. Dick Ellsworth goes to 14-15 for Chicago. Julian Javier, Lou Brock and Mike Shannon homer for the Birds. A dropped pop-up in the top of the 9th secures St. Louis' place in history.

1965: At the Astrodome facing Don Nottebart, Giant outfielder Willie Mays becomes the fifth player in major league history to hit 500 career home runs. The "Say Hey Kid" will hit a league-leading and career-high 52 home runs en route to his second MVP season. Juan Marichal gets his 22nd victory, a 5 - 1 decision over Houston. It is the 11th straight win for San Francisco.

1969: Detroit is eliminated when they lose to the Senators, 11 - 6. The Nats score five in the 5th, three coming home on a Ken McMullen homer, one of his four hits in the game. Detroit rallies in the 6th on Willie Horton's 3rd grand slam of the year, but McMullen knocks home another two runs to give Darold Knowles (7-3) the win over Tom Timmermann.

1971: Frank Robinson of the Orioles homers in each game of a doubleheader split with Detroit, his 499th & 500th home runs. The O's win the opener, 9 - 1, behind Dave McNally's 13th consecutive win. The Tigers use 17 hits to win the nitecap, 10 - 5, for Fred Scherman, who pitches 8 2/3 innings in relief of Joe Niekro.

1972: Frank Howard, who is not playing regularly for the Tigers, hits a 3-run homer off Dave McNally of the Orioles for a Detroit victory. It is his 13th career four-bagger off his favorite pitcher.

1978: Yankees beat the Tigers to take over first place from Boston, after trailing the Red Sox by 14 games in July.

1983: Oakland's Rickey Henderson steals three bases in a 6 - 5 win over Texas to give him 101 for the season and a major league-record three consecutive seasons with 100 or more.

1987: Alan Trammell homers for 2nd straight game. Will finish with 28 HRs, 105 RBIs, .343 average, all career highs.
Tigers beat the brewers 5 - 1.

1989: Jack Morris gets his 162nd and final win of the 1980s, the most of any major league pitcher during that decade.
Obligated to point out he was 12th in WAR over the same span.

1995: Tigers Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell set a new American League record for joint appearances - 1,915 games.

1997: In St. Louis, Tony Gwynn reaches 200 hits for the fifth time in his career in the Padres' 8 - 3 win over the Cardinals.

2001: Due the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Major League Baseball postpones all games through September 17th. The 91 missed games, the most regular-season contests not played since World War I forced the cancellation of the final month of the 1918 season, are re-scheduled for the week after the regular season was supposed to end, meaning the World Series is likely to extend into November for the first time in history.

2002: The U.S. Senate passes a resolution honoring beloved Tiger broadcaster Ernie Harwell who is retiring at the end of the season. The 84-year-old has been a major league baseball announcer for 55 years.

2011: Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers continue to steamroll over opponents. Verlander picks up his 23rd win - the first pitcher to reach that total since Barry Zito in 2002 - when he pitches 7 shutout innings over the White Sox for a 5 - 0 win. Verlander has won his last 11 starts, something no one has done for the Bengals since Hal Newhouser in 1946. The win is also Detroit's 11th straight this month.

2011: Mariano Rivera becomes the second pitcher to record 600 saves, one year after Trevor Hoffman, in preserving New York's 3 - 2 win over Seattle with a scoreless 9th inning. "Mo" is only one save behind Hoffman's all-time record, as Hoffman retired after last season.

2013: The Detroit Tigers traded a player to be named later and Danry Vasquez (minors) to the Houston Astros for Jose Veras. The Detroit Tigers sent David Paulino (September 13, 2013) to the Houston Astros to complete the trade.

1900: At the Polo Grounds, the Giants pull off the first triple play of the 20th century. With Chicago's Johnny Kling behind the plate, Jack Doyle, George Davis and Kid Gleason do the deed. It'll be 10 years before another trifecta is pulled off in the National League.

1901: Boston's Cy Young records his 30th win of the year, beating the visiting Washington Nationals, 12 - 1.

1905: Joe Tinker and Johnny Evers engage in a fist fight on the field during an exhibition game in Washington, IN, because Evers took a taxi to the park, leaving his teammates in the hotel lobby. The pair will not speak to each other ever again.

1910: Detroit rookie Dave Skeels, just 17 years old, make his first and only ML appearance, surrendering eight runs on nine hits and four walks in six innings, but comes away with a win. He finishes the day and his ML career with an ERA of 12.00.

1914: After being ejected for swearing, Johnny Evers claims he was talking to the ball and not to umpire Mal Eason, but the Braves' shortstop is still suspended for three days.

1915: Babe Ruth fires a two-hitter, as the Red Sox beat the White Sox, 2 - 1, for their 7th win in a row. Ruth has two of Boston's three hits. Boston will win four of five in the series with Chicago.

1921: Washington's Walter Johnson gives up three hits but still faces just 27 batters in edging the Browns 1 - 0. Following two singles in the 4th, George Sisler's line drive is turned into a triple play. Jack Tobin singles in the 7th, but Johnson picks him off. Tobin will set an American League record this year with 179 singles, a mark that Sam Rice will top in 1925.

1923: Red Sox first baseman George Burns completes an unassisted triple play against the Indians as he gathers in a Frank Brower line drive, tags Rube Lutzke coming from first, and beats Riggs Stephenson back to second.

1924: Hours after beating the Tigers in Detroit, Walter Johnson receives word he's been elected American League MVP with 55 points. White Sox 2B Eddie Collins is a distant 2nd. He was runner-up to Babe Ruth last year.

1925: The Detroit Tigers traded Everett Spikes (minors), Bob Jones, Dutch Leonard, Buck Redfern and cash and 3 players to be named to Vernon (PCL) for Jack Warner.

1935: The Yankees split with the American League-leading Tigers winning 2 - 1 and losing 5 - 1. Hank Greenberg, leading the AL in hitting at .346, is 0 for the afternoon, with five strikeouts. "The hooting and jeering which some of the fans turned loose against Hank wasn't much of a tribute to the sportsmanship of his home town" (New York American Daily News).

1936: Pittsburgh's Paul Waner ties Rogers Hornsby's modern National League record, reaching 200 hits for the 7th time.

1938: The Brooklyn Dodgers purchased Don Ross from the Detroit Tigers.
1938: The Brooklyn Dodgers selected Ray Hayworth off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

1940: The United States, Hawaii, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico meet in the 3rd annual World Amateur Baseball Championship tourney, the first championship series to feature more than 3 participants. Cuba, the host country, is the victor for the 2nd consecutive year. The initial tourney had been held in England in 1938 and was also won by the host country, Great Britain.

1941: Satchel Paige pitches a 6-hit complete game for the Kansas City Monarchs against the Chicago American Giants at Briggs (Tiger) Stadium, in Game 1 of a doubleheader that draws over 34,000 fans.

1942: In the Negro League World Series, Leon Day, pitching for the Homestead Grays, fans 12 in beating Satchel Paige and the Kansas City Monarchs, 4 - 1, in Game 4. The Monarchs protest, contending that Day and 3 other players were picked up from other teams. Day's win is disallowed, and the Monarchs sweep the 4 games.

1947: Tigers Vic Wertz hits for the Cycle during a 16-6 victory over the Washington Senators. Wertz' cycle: 3B (2nd), 1B (4th), HR (6th), 2B (7th).

1950: In Detroit, Vic Raschi posts his 20th win of the season to give New York a hard-fought 7 - 5 win. Raschi walks in two runs in the opening inning as Detroit tallies four runs, but New York comes back as Joe DiMaggio cracks his 29th home run and Johnny Mize follows a walk to Hank Bauer with his 10th homer. New York takes over first place by a half game.

1953: The Detroit Tigers signed Bob Swift as a free agent.

1954: Willie Mays hits a 1st inning double and scores the only run in a 1 - 0 win over the Cards. It is Johnny Antonelli's 21st win of the year. Mays's hit is his 82nd extra-base hit, breaking Mel Ott's team record.

1954: Frank Lary makes his major league debut. Lary would pitch 11 seasons with the Tigers and make 2 All-Star teams. Lary's nicknames were "Mule" and the "Yankee Killer". He had a 28 and 13 career record vs. new york and in the late 1950's and was the last pitcher to win 7 games vs. one team (new york) in a season (154 game schedule).

1955: Herb Score of the Indians breaks Grover Cleveland Alexander's rookie record of 235 strikeouts. He finishes the season with 245.

1957: The Detroit Tigers purchased Bill Taylor from the New York Giants.

1963: Willie Horton hits his first career home run, a pinch-hit 2-run shot to tie the game in the 8th inning. He improves to 2-for-2 with a walk in his first three major league plate appearances.

1974: Graig Nettles homers for the Yankees in the first inning, and brother Jim Nettles homers for the Tigers in the 2nd. This is the second time that the two brothers have homered in the same game for different teams, having done it on June 11, 1972, when Graig was with Cleveland and Jim with Minnesota. Graig's team wins, 10 - 7.

1975: The Red Sox top the Brewers, 8 - 6, as Robin Yount breaks Mel Ott's 47-year-old record by playing in his 242nd game as a teenager.

1982: Richie Hebner and Bill Madlock hit grand slams to lead the Pirates to a 15 - 5 rout of the Cubs.

1986: Bo Jackson slugs his first major league home run - a 475-foot blast believed to be the longest to date at Royals Stadium - as Kansas City downs Seattle, 10 - 3.

1987: Alan Trammell goes 3-for-4 with a double, Tigers win 3 - 0 over the red sox to stay tied for first place in the division.

1990: Mariner Ken Griffey, Sr. and his son, Ken Griffey, Jr., become the first father and son to hit homers in the same major league game. The back-to-back blasts are given up by Angel hurler Kirk McCaskill.

1990: Oakland's Dave Stewart wins his 20th game of the season, 9 - 1 over the Twins to become the first pitcher since Jim Palmer (1975-1978) to post four straight 20-game seasons.

1991: In the Tigers' 6 - 4 win over the Brewers, Detroit's Cecil Fielder hits a 502-foot home run, which is believed to be the first ball ever hit out of Milwaukee's County Stadium, off Dan Plesac. The ball lands in the back of a truck driven by Gary Schumacher, who doesn't stop until he is near Madison, WI.

1994: The remainder of the baseball season is canceled by acting commissioner Bud Selig after 34 days of the players' strike. There will be no World Series for the first time since 1904.

1995: The Kansas City Royals traded a player to be named later to the Detroit Tigers for Juan Samuel. The Kansas City Royals sent Phil Hiatt (September 14, 1995) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

1998: The White Sox and Tigers combine for 41 hits and tie a major league record by using 18 pitchers in the Sox' 17-16 win in 12 innings at Tiger Stadium.

2003: The Tigers lose their 110th game, 7 - 2 to the royals, breaking the franchise record set by the 1996 Tigers: first team to lose 110 since the expansion Expos and Padres in 1969.

2011: The Tigers rally to tie the White Sox in the 9th inning on home runs by Ryan Raburn and Alex Avila, and win 6 - 5 on a Carlos Guillen RBI single in the 10th.
The rally gives the Tigers their 12th straight win, their third-longest winning streak in franchise history.

There is no denying it.

The Tigers have one of the worst starting staffs in baseball. But in 2020, should that really be the case? What didn?t happen the way we would have liked?

The trades of 2015, cutely referred to as part of a reboot by Dave Dombrowski so as not to ruffle the feathers of the fan base, brought the Tigers three pitchers. Stars left Detroit that day, in the form of David Price and Yoenis Cespedes in exchange for Daniel Norris, Matthew Boyd and Michael Fulmer.

Three pitchers who, as we sit here today, will probably not be here when the team contends again. And it?s not because contention is so far away, it is because all 3, Norris, Boyd and Fulmer, look like they will have very little impact on any future success.

You might have envisioned that, when they all arrived in Detroit, they would have the potential to anchor the starting rotation for years to come. We hoped, anyway.

But it hasn?t worked out.

It?s another reason why you must neutralize your expectations when it comes to prospects in your own system or when they are acquired from another.

What were the chances that they would all have high impact on the team? What were the odds that they could all be plugged into the starting rotation together some day?

Likely? Probably not? One or 2 of them would be a victory.

Fulmer has had the most success with the Tigers, having won a Rookie of the Year award and earned an All-Star Game appearance. But big injuries have ravaged his career since and he now spends his time pitching the first 3 innings of games in 2020, just trying to get back into the swing of things after returning from TJS.

Matthew Boyd has had marginal success and for the last year or so, he was the ace of the staff. My feeling is that when Boyd is your ace, it?s a sure sign that there isn?t anyone else.

And for Daniel Norris, it has been a frustrating ride for him in Detroit, with so many injuries and ailments (including cancer) that have hindered him and his progress. And it has only been this year that he has been healthy and things have calmed down.

But still, this is a long reliever in the pen at best, as he has had little success as a starter when he was considered to be the big prize from the David Price trade.

It?s not the pretty picture we had envisioned when the Tigers received 2 young pitching prospects in the Price deal and 1 highly sought-after pitcher from the Mets for Cespedes.

All 3 have been mentioned often in trade scenarios; inside of five years after receiving them.

So look where we are today. All the big expectations for the Tigers revolve around 3 pitchers; 2 who have made it to the bigs and 1 who will probably show up in 2021.

Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal have earned mixed reviews during the season of weird in 2020. When I say that this has been a season of opportunities, I am sure both Mize and Skubal would agree with me.

Yes, they have had their struggles, but they have also shown that they have big league pitching talent.

The third pitcher, Matt Manning, will not make his debut this season due to an injury but he is the next pitcher expected to plug his name into the starting rotation next season.

Big expectations? You bet. Should we be more guarded? Of course.

Mize and Skubal are on pitch count limitations and have been shielded from any late game, high stress innings. Oh, and yes, they have had shorter appearances because they were getting hit around; all part of the maturity process in the big leagues.

With only a couple more weeks or so left in the season, time is running out on the auditions for Mize and Skubal; time in the rotation that should prove to be very valuable heading into next season.

But nothing is guaranteed as we have learned with Norris, Boyd and Fulmer ? once 3 young prospects expected to make meaningful contributions in Detroit.

Certainly, all of us who are excited about the prospects of Mize, Skubal, Manning and even Alex Faedo could eventually have our expectations dashed by who knows what.

So it goes in sports, where fans constantly dream but reality is still in charge.
