Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

The Detroit Tigers have finally parted ways with Lloyd McClendon. Just 1 more statement about the intention of moving on from the old clique and updating the organization.

Not a shock that this happened. McClendon got the job because of the sudden passing of Kimera Bartee and the need to find an emergency replacement who also knew AAA. Remember, when A. J. Hinch was hired, he didn't want Lloyd to remain on the coaching staff.

The priority of AAA is not about the # of wins but about player development. Expect Ryan Garko to hire someone with no Tiger ties. Don't be surprised if the next AAA manager is a Dodger given Garko's ties and LA's reputation as having one of the top player development systems.

Chris and Rogelio discuss the hiring of Mark Conner who was named director of amateur scouting for the Padres in 2014, a role he held until late 2021.

In Conner?s time as scouting director in San Diego the Padres signed 24 future big-league players. That includes a pair of late-round gems who went on to be All-Stars in David Bednar (35th round, 2016) and Ty France (34th round, 2015).

1926: Ty Cobb resigns as Detroit Tigers manager after leading his team to a record of 79-75 and a sixth-place finish. Umpire and former Tigers infielder George Moriarty replaces him.
Moriarty is the first man to hold baseball's four principal jobs: player, umpire, scout and manager. Cobb will sign a playing contract with the Philadelphia Athletics and will bat .357 during the 1927 season.

1928: Voters in Massachusetts approve Sunday baseball in Boston, provided that Braves Field is more than 1,000 feet from a church. This leaves Pennsylvania as the only state with no Sunday baseball in the major leagues.

1934: Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees won the American League Triple Crown after hitting .363 with 49 home runs and 165 RBI. Nevertheless, Detroit Tigers C Mickey Cochrane, who hit .320 with 2 home runs and 76 RBI, is named AL Most Valuable Player.

1934: St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dizzy Dean, who posted a 30-7 record with 195 strikeouts and a 2.66 ERA, is chosen as National League MVP.

1942: Boston Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams was the Triple Crown winner in the American League, but the Baseball Writers Association of America selects Joe Gordon as AL Most Valuable Player. Williams finished with a .356 average, 36 home runs and 137 RBI. Gordon of the New York Yankees, though he batted .322 with a .900 OPS, led the AL in strikeouts (95), most ground balls hit into double plays (22) and the most errors at second base (28).

1953: The baseball rules committee restores the 1939 sacrifice fly rule, which says a sac fly is not charged as a time at bat.

1953: MLB?s rules committee formally ended the practice of fielders leaving their gloves on the field while their teams batted. Henceforth they would be required to carry their leather back to the dugout between innings.

1960: Vern Law, who finished 20-9 with 18 complete games for the National League champion Pittsburgh Pirates, is voted Cy Young Award winner. Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves finishes second.

1965: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax, who posted a 26-8 record, a 1.73 ERA, and a record-shattering 382 strikeouts, is named Cy Young Award winner by a unanimous vote and for the third time.

1967: Boston Red Sox pitcher Jim Lonborg, who was 22-9 with 246 strikeouts for the American League champions, is named the 1967 American League Cy Young Award winner.

1970: St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson wins the National League Cy Young Award by a 118-51 margin over Gaylord Perry of the San Francisco Giants. Gibson posted a 23-7 record with 274 strikeouts and a 3.12 ERA.

1979: The American League and National League All-Star teams depart on an exhibition tour of Japan. The NL squad will take four of seven from its AL counterparts, but the teams will combine to split a pair of games with the Japanese All-Stars.

1981: Milwaukee Brewers reliever Rollie Fingers, with a 6-3 record, 28 saves and a 1.04 ERA, wins the 1981 American League Cy Young Award, collecting 22 of 28 possible first-place votes.

1991: Houston Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell is named the National League Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Houston player to win the award. Bagwell hit .294 with a team-leading 15 home runs and 82 RBI. His 82 walks also led the Astros. Bagwell was picked in the fourth round of the 1989 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox, then traded in the 1990 stretch drive for relief pitcher Larry Andersen.

1992: The New York Yankees make one of their best trades ever by acquiring outfielder Paul O'Neill from the Cincinnati Reds for OF Roberto Kelly. O'Neill will help the Yankees win World Championships in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000.

1993: The Detroit Tigers signed Alan Trammell as a free agent.

2000: Willie Blair of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2001: In Game 6 of the World Series, the Diamondbacks get 21 hits in the first six innings against the Yankees to set a record for hits in a World Series game. The previous record of 20 was established by the New York Giants against the Yankees in Game 3 of the 1921 World Series, and St. Louis in Game 4 of the the 1946 World Series against the Red Sox. The Diamondbacks win, 15 - 2, forcing a decisive Game 7. Randy Johnson is the winning pitcher and Andy Pettitte the loser.

1889: After a formal meeting of representatives from all National League chapters, the Brotherhood issues a "Manifesto" in which it claims that "players have been bought, sold and exchanged as though they were sheep instead of American citizens." This bold statement constitutes a declaration of war between the Brotherhood and major league officials which will soon explode into the formation of the Players League.

1899: Michigan beats Virginia 38-0 at Bennett Park at Michigan & Trumbull.

1912: Miller Huggins is named manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, beginning his 17-year career as a skipper.

1935: Cal Hubbard, pro football tackle with the Green Bay Packers, joins the American League umpiring staff.

1957 - With a new balk rule, the batter now has an option after the call is made. If a player gets a hit, he can accept the outcome of the pitch, instead of being only limited to the advance of the baserunner(s).

1976: The first mass-market free agent re-entry draft is held at the New York Plaza Hotel. Among those available are Reggie Jackson, Willie McCovey, Joe Rudi, Don Gullett, Gene Tenace, Nate Colbert, Rollie Fingers, Don Baylor and Bobby Grich. McCovey and Colbert are the only two players not selected, but McCovey will catch on with the Giants in spring training and have a banner year at his old first base position.

1980: Japan's all-time home run hitter, Sadaharu Oh, retires from professional baseball. The Tokyo Yomiuri Giants' first baseman hit a record 868 home runs in his 22-year playing career.

1980: The Detroit Tigers signed Dave Gumpert as an amateur free agent.

1980: Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies joins Sandy Koufax, Tom Seaver and Jim Palmer, as pitchers with three Cy Young Awards. Carlton garners all but one of the 24 first-place votes to take National League honors. He posted a 24-9 record with a 2.34 ERA and a league-leading 286 strikeouts.

2001: In Game 7 of a classic World Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks rally for two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the New York Yankees and their usually unbeatable closer, Mariano Rivera, 3 - 2. The four-year-old Diamondbacks, the youngest franchise to win a Fall Classic, end New York's string of three consecutive World Championships.

2010: Eddie Bonine of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2010: The Detroit Tigers traded Brent Dlugach to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later. The Boston Red Sox sent Pedro Perez (minors) (April 2, 2011) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade.

2010: Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson dies in Thousand Oaks, California at 76. Nicknamed "Captain Hook" for his tendency to remove his starting pitchers early in the game - now standard practice - he was the first manager to win over 100 games in a season in both leagues, and the first to lead teams from both leagues to World Championships, doing so with Cincinnati in 1975 and 1976, and with Detroit in 1984.

New President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris, has said he plans on hiring a GM. He just didn?t say when.

He did mention that he has yet to start the hiring process and has not even set a deadline. And given that the Winter Meetings start in less than 1 month, Harris certainly isn?t going to rush the timeline. He?s going to wait until the time is right.

So while some fans may be anxious to see that GM slot filled as soon as possible, I think it?s a wiser move to postpone for awhile.

There is no rule stating that every team has to have a GM. Some don?t. Some teams have a GM but not a PoBO and vice versa. Some have both. Today, the job description for both positions is very fluid with some PoBOs acting as the GM. The 2 jobs don?t have to be completely different. And as we?ve seen with other teams, they can also evolve according to an organization?s needs.

Here are my 5 reasons why it?s a smart move that Harris appears to be delaying the hiring process for a GM?..

Root was on the mound for the Chicago Cubs when Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees allegedly "called his shot" before hitting a home run.

1976: Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer, who led the American League with 22 victories and 315 innings pitched, outpoints Detroit Tigers rookie Mark Fidrych to win the American League Cy Young Award.

1976: The new franchises, the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays, select 30 players apiece from other American League teams in the expansion draft. The Mariners take outfielder Ruppert Jones with their first choice, while the Blue Jays tab infielder Bob Bailor with their initial pick.
