A complete 5 tool ballplayer, Kaline becomes the greatest defensive outfielder in American League history, winning 10 Gold Gloves for fielding excellence. After 5 full years and 85 assists, opposing teams stop running on Kaline's legendary throwing arm considered to be the Most Accurate in Major League History. Kaline is voted to 18 All-Star games batting a cool .324 12 for 37 with 2 Homeruns.
Al is the runnerup in the A.L. MVP ballot in 1955 and 1963, winning the prestigious Sporting News A.L. Player of the Year Award those seasons, and a 3rd place finish in the MVP ballot in 1956 and 10 years in the top 10 voting for MVP over his career.

This recognizes the fact that there should be no going back to the days when players had to put their life and the well-being of their families at risk, and deal with unsavory criminal elements, in order to come to the United States. It creates a situation that is akin to that which prevailed before the Cuban Revolution in 1959. However, the Administration of President Donald Trump will kill the deal on April 8th as part of a policy of maintaining as hard a line as possible in dealing with Cuban authorities.

2018: The Detroit Tigers signed Eduardo Paredes as a free agent.

2017: The Rays send 3B Evan Longoria, arguably the greatest player in team history, to the Giants in a trade for four players, the most prominent of whom is OF Denard Span. Longoria comes with a risk as he is due to make $86 million over the next five seasons, but his acquisition fills a huge hole as the Giants got the worst offensive production from their third basemen among all major league teams last year.

2022: In a stunning turn of events, moments before a scheduled press conference in which the Giants are set to introduce Carlos Correa, with whom they reached agreement on a 13-year, $350 million contract on December 13th, the team backs away from the deal because of an undisclosed problem that turned up during the normally routine physical examination. WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Jake Rogers, acquired in the infamous Justin Verlander trade, is going into just his 2nd full year as a catcher. He had 2 partial seasons followed by a year out of the game because of Tommy John surgery.

He is in his first year of salary arbitration and a free agent in 3 years. He will be 29 this season.

Rogers is a neutral defender, neither really saving or costing the Tigers runs defensively. He is considered to be a ?defense first? catcher and works well with his pitchers. In today?s game, the defensive talents of a catcher greatly outweigh their offensive skills.

Offensively is where he struggles. While he has slugging power, there are issues with too many strikeouts, too few walks and trouble getting on base. Both he and Javier Baez get on base the least out of all the regular lineup players.

His career offensive totals are .205/.277/.417 which are below average.

In the meantime, the Tigers have created and accelerated a catcher development program. Signing multiple catchers for development and depth while creating a program to speed their development. New coaches who specialize in working with them have been brought in to assist.

Historically, the Tigers have been unable to develop solid catchers in their system. Currently, Dillon Dingler is the closest to reaching Detroit but he, too, is struggling at the plate which has delayed his debut.

The Tigers were also rumored to have received the Dodgers? top-ranked catching prospect if the Eduardo Rodriguez trade had gone through.

All of this info has hinted that the Tigers want something more from their #1 catcher.

But what does this mean for Rogers? future? What do you think?

What is Jake Rogers' future with the Tigers?

1. He is the long-term solution to catcher.

2. It is still too early to say.

3. He is the short-term solution to catcher.

VOTE

We know it's highly unlikely but we can't help but fantasize about the potential here. Especially given that there are rumors that the Detroit Tigers have quietly put out feelers re trading Javy Baez.

And when you consider that PoBO Scott Harris came from the Giants, it gives him an "in" with Zaidi. But there are 4 significant roadblocks to overcome.

Javy's 10-team no trade clause. His $98 mill salary (much of which the Tigers would have to eat). Baez's offensive woes. And that the Tigers don't have someone who would easily be able to take over at SS.

December 21 in Tigers and mlb history:

1911: Future Hall of Fame catcher Josh Gibson is born in Buena Vista, Georgia. Although record-keeping in the Negro Leagues is somewhat nebulous, Gibson will become the leading home run hitter in all of black baseball. His legendary power will earn him the nickname, "The Black Babe Ruth." Gibson began his pro career at age 18 with the Homestead Grays before becoming a star with the Pittsburgh Crawfords.

1940: Chicago writers name Cleveland Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau as the outstanding rookie in the major leagues. Boudreau will be honored at the annual January banquet. The Rookie of the Year Award won't be created until 1947, however.

1944: Official National League statistics published today show Brooklyn's Dixie Walker at the top of the hitters with a .357 batting average, ahead of Stan Musial at .347. In an even closer vote than occurred in the American League, the National League Most Valuable Player Award goes to fielding wizard shortstop Marty Marion of the Cardinals, who tallies one more vote than Cubs slugger Bill Nicholson (189). The Cardinals committed only 112 errors and fielded .982, both better than previous records held by the 1940 Cincinnati Reds. Marion is the third different Cardinals player in three years to win MVP honors.

1960: Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley announces the club will not have a manager for the next season, but will instead use a college of coaches, who will take turns managing the ballclub. The original eight coaches include Charlie Grimm, Ripper Collins and Rube Walker. Before the season is over, Vedie Himsl, Harry Craft, El Tappe and Lou Klein will have taken turns leading the team. The results will be disastrous for the Cubs, who will finish the season 35 games out of first place, but the experiment will be repeated in 1962 before being shelved for good.

1981: The Philadelphia Phillies sign future Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt to a six-year contract worth $1.2 million per season. During the strike-shortened 1981 season, Schmidt led the National League in home runs (31), RBI (91) and runs (78).

1982: All-Star first baseman Steve Garvey signs a free agent five-year contract with the San Diego Padres. Garvey leaves the Los Angeles Dodgers after 14 seasons.

1995: Alan Trammell of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1997: Bob Hamelin of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

1998: Comerica Bank buys the naming rights for the Tigers' new ballpark.
Owner Mike Illitch initially favored the name "Tigers Park." Comerica provided 66 million reasons to reconsider.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DupXK_VWoAgiCCb.jpg

1999: The Dodgers are fined $50,000 and banned from scouting any Dominican Republic players for one year as a penalty for having signed third baseman Adrian Beltre as a 15-year-old. Beltre is not given his free agency, according to Commissioner Bud Selig, because he participated in the scheme, and because the claim for free agency was made too late. The players association is expected to file a grievance in the matter, but the ruling will stand.

2000: Hoping to pick it up where it all started, 41-year old OF Tim Raines agrees to a minor league contract with the Montreal Expos, the team he broke in with in 1979. After retiring in Yankees camp during spring training with a .295 career batting average, Raines failed to make this year's U.S. Olympic team.

2001: The Detroit Tigers signed Jacob Cruz as a free agent.

2002: Robert Fick of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2002: Julio Santana of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2003: Ben Petrick of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.
2003: Andy Van Hekken of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2004: Eric Munson of the Detroit Tigers granted free agency.

2009: The San Diego Padres purchased Dusty Ryan from the Detroit Tigers.

2015: The Pittsburgh Pirates purchased Kyle Lobstein from the Detroit Tigers.

2018: The Dodgers pull off a big trade with the Reds, sending four major leaguers - OFs Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp, P Alex Wood and C Kyle Farmer, in return for P Homer Bailey and prospects Josiah Gray and Jeter Downs. The main purpose of the trade for L.A. appears to be to clear roster and salary space in order to sign free agent OF Bryce Harper, as they release Bailey immediately after acquiring him, buying off $28 million he is still owed on his contract.

2018: The Associated Press reports that the average salary in the major leagues went down last season, for the first time since 2004, albeit by a very small amount, according to data provided by the Players Association. The typical player took home $4.095 million, down from $4.097 million the year before. The other times salaries had failed to rise were during collusion in the mid-1980s and after the devastating 1994 strike. In 2018, teams had been notably reticent to offer salaries to free agents, with a huge number being still unsigned when spring training opened and many forced to accept salaries below their previous market value.

2019: The Tigers, owners of the worst record and the most anemic line-up in the majors last season, add a couple of power hitters on one-year free agent deals, both for $6.1 million. The similarities don't end there as 1B C.J. Cron and 2B Jonathan Schoop were both with the Twins last season, and put up very similar numbers: Cron hit .253 with 25 homers in 125 games, and Schoop .256 with 23 homers in 121 games.

2021: With Major League Baseball still under an off-season lockout, figures are released today which show that major league salaries dropped by 4% last season, returning to levels not seen since 2015, and have been in decline since 2017, at a time when revenues have grown steadily. For the purpose of luxury tax payments, the Dodgers had the highest payroll, at $285.6 million, generating a tax bill of $32.6 million, whereas ten teams were under $100 million in total payroll.

2022: The Yankees officially name Aaron Judge as the 16th team captain of their history and the first since Derek Jeter's retirement at the end of the 2014 season. Jeter and another former captain, Willie Randolph, are on hand to bestow the honorary title on the man who just broke Roger Maris's American League record for most home runs in one season.

2022: The Detroit Tigers selected Mario Feliciano off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers.
