Detroit Tigers Team Notes Over 3 Million Views!!! Thankyou!

March 23 in Tigers and mlb history:

1889: John Ward arrives in New York, having left the world tour early, and states that he might consent to play with the Washington Nationals if he receives a major portion of the $12,000 sale price. On April 2nd he will kill the deal with the Giants by refusing to play for Washington.

1900: The Brooklyn Superbas sell John McGraw, Wilbert Robinson and Bill Keister to the St. Louis Cardinals for $15,000. McGraw and Robinson refuse to report.

1936: Pitcher Dizzy Dean ends his well-publicized holdout and signs a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. Dean agrees to a one-year deal that will pay him $24,000 for the upcoming season.

1938: Commissioner Landis frees 74 St. Louis Cardinals minor leaguers, among them Pete Reiser, in yet another attempt to halt the farm system cover-up. Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Larry MacPhail makes a pact with his St. Louis counterpart, Branch Rickey, to take the as-yet unknown Reiser and swap him back in the future, but the young outfielder's ability is too great to hide.

1941: New York Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio, a holdout and late arrival in spring training, plays his first exhibition game.

1951: The Brooklyn Dodgers sign a 21-year lease with the city of Vero Beach, Florida, for use of their spring training facilities there.

1959: The San Francisco Giants clear space for future Hall of Famers Orlando Cepeda and Willie McCovey by trading first baseman Bill White to the St. Louis Cardinals. Cepeda won the 1958 National League Rookie of the Year Award after batting .312 with 25 home runs and 96 RBI. McCovey, a top prospect in the Giants' farm system, will make his major league debut this season.

1963: The Washington Senators traded Wayne Comer to the Detroit Tigers for Bobo Osborne.

1978: The Detroit Tigers release Rich Folkers and Roric Harrison.

1982: The Detroit Tigers traded Roger Weaver to the Atlanta Braves for Eddie Miller.

1987: The Detroit Tigers released Brian Harper.

1988: The Detroit Tigers signed Mark Huismann as a free agent.

1989: The Tigers trade longtime institutional stalwart Tom Brookens to the Yankees.
1989: The San Diego Padres traded Mike Brumley to the Detroit Tigers for Luis Salazar.
1989: The Chicago White Sox traded Ken Williams to the Detroit Tigers for Eric King.

1990: Gambler Howard Spira is arrested for extorting money from New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who paid Spira $40,000 in January. The Commissioner will suspend Steinbrenner because of his relationship with the unsavory character.

1992: The National League announces that president Bill White will step down at the end of his term in 1993. A former St. Louis Cardinals star, White became the first African-American league president in 1989.

2001: The Detroit Tigers released Scott Servais.

2003: The Detroit Tigers release Kevin Barker and Julio Santana.

2006: According to a new book, San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds tried to keep his name out of the BALCO scandal, sending his lawyer into meetings with company representatives to ask for protection.

2013: The Detroit Tigers returned Jeff Kobernus (earlier draft pick) to the Washington Nationals.

2013: Virgil Trucks dies in Calera, Alabama, at age 95. Pitched two no-hitters for the Tigers during the 1952 season.

2015: Hillerich & Bradsby, which has manufactured the iconic Louisville Slugger bats for 130 years, sells the brand to the rival Wilson Sporting Goods company for $70 million. The bats will continue to be produced in Louisville, KY and the Louisville Slugger Museum will also remain open.

2017: The Detroit Tigers released David Martinez.

2018: A few lines in a 2,000 page, $1.3 trillion spending bill passed by Congress exempts Major League Baseball from certain terms of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The consequences are that minor leaguers need no longer be paid for spring training, off-season workouts or any overtime during the season. The change, misnomingly entitled the "Save America's Pastime Act", is the result of active lobbying by MLB to preempt a lawsuit filed four years ago in a U.S. District Court in San Francisco, CA by former minor league player Garrett Broshuis on behalf of three active players that accuses teams of systematically violating labor laws.

While the world has been focused on how badly Javier Baez is doing at the plate in spring training, there is yet another player who is raising concern.
Spencer Torkelson has gotten just 4 hits in 35 at-bats. He leads the team in strikeouts at almost a 50% clip.
No HRs and his total bases equals that of Baez. His slash line is .114/.225/.200/.425. His batting stats are the 2nd worst by far, just ahead of Baez. Everyone else, including the invitees and prospects are hitting much better than he is.
Yes, it is spring training but you have to consider that he’s also hitting against pitching prospects as well as MLB-level ones. And it’s been a prolonged slump.
Tork has had problems in the past. In his rookie year, he got sent down to Toledo for failing to hit. Last year, he went through several slumps during the season.
There is some thought that his MLB-worst defensive skills at 1B are messing with his process at the plate. That he’s having a hard time focusing. Even Miguel Cabrera who is coaching him, said they are also working on the mental side of the game.
How concerned are you about Spencer Torkelson’s struggles at the plate?

How concerned are you about Spencer Torkelson's struggles at the plate?

1. Not at all concerned.

2. I am somewhat worried.

3. I am very concerned.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The 2024 baseball season starts later this week. Scott Harris is going into his 2nd year as the PoBO and now Jeff Greenberg has joined him as the GM.
The Tigers have tweaked 2 infield positions and 2 outfield slots while overhauling their starting rotation and making significant changes to their bullpen. At least 3 rookies are expected to make their debuts during the coming year.
But some struggles remain with several players and an offense that needs significant help. However, there has been more competition for roster openings, unlike previous years.

As we await that first pitch, what are your thoughts about the new season?
Are you excited about what may happen?
Are you looking forward to watching this team more?
Or do you think the Tigers haven’t done enough?
Today’s assignment is to tell us what you’re thinking and why when you consider what the 2024 season may bring.

How are you feeling about what the 2024 season may bring?

1. I am very excited about the new season.

2. I'm leaning somewhat more positive about my expectations of the new season.

3. I'm not sure how I feel right now.

4. I'm not feeling very positive about the new season.
