Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom calls ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s hot topic.
The Detroit Tigers are mired in a significant offense slump that has spanned the entire season so far. Through Monday?s game, they are scoring less than 2 runs per game on average. The MLB average is just over 4 runs per game.

Save for 1 hitter, the rest of the lineup simply isn?t hitting. If you didn?t read yesterday?s blog that outlines the issues, here it is:

While it?s usually a combination of factors, if you had to identify which group was most responsible for this lack of scoring ability, which would you select?

The players for their lack of talent and/or hitting ability?

The hitting coaches, Scott Coolbaugh and Mike Hessman, for their lack of results?

Or the architect of the rebuild, GM Al Avila, for being too focused on drafting and developing pitchers and not giving enough attention to developing/acquiring hitters?

Who do you believe is most responsible for the Tigers' lack of offense?

1. The players

2. The hitting coaches

3. The GM/Front Office

This year it?s injuries. Prior excuses for losing have been:

1) Dombrowski left the farm bare
2) Miggy?s contract
3) Zimmermann?s contract
4) We?re rebuilding
5) We?re tanking to get high draft picks
6) Spring Training started late

Never any accountability for AA.

The Detroit Tigers have been struggling all year and continue to rank as one of MLB?s worst teams. A surprise for many fans considering that the roster performed better than expected last year and played over .500 baseball for the second half of the season.

Granted, there is always the chance that things improve as they did last year. But frankly, the current signs are not encouraging. And it doesn?t help that Detroit ranks near the top in players on the IL.

So how did the team get to where it is today?

If you had to point your finger at 1 group as the single biggest factor in creating these results, who would you pick?
Which group is the biggest factor in the Tigers' poor performance this year?

1. Significant injuries.

2. A. J. Hinch and his coaches.

3. Al Avila's roster building plan.

In his only 3 seasons NOT rebuilding, Al Avila spent roughly 375 MILLION Dollars to acquire:
Jordan Zimmermann: 6.06 ERA
Justin Upton: .840 OPS until traded
Mark Lowe: Paid $5.5M to leave
Mike Pelfrey: Paid $8M to leave
Eduardo Rodriguez: 4.38 ERA
Javier Baez: .198 AVG, .540 OPS

I'm not sure if Chris Illitch cares..but he's about to have an empty ballpark empty parking lots and a very good manager and coaching staff all leave..his devotion to the most incompetent GM in Tigers history..is truly puzzling..its a lost decade of being a baseball fan in DET.

9 seasons above .500 in the 28 full seasons of ownership by the Ilitch family.

(93, a tiny 12 year gap, 06, 07, 09, 11, 12, 13, 14 ,16, 5 year gap and rising).

Very likely to be 9 seasons of 29, after 2022 is concluded. 9 of 29 is 31%.

When You have respected Media like Lynn Henning talking about Al Avila,
I hope Chris Ilitch takes notice.

Al Avila was named Tigers GM August 4, 2015. Since that day, the Tigers are 408-576. That's a .415 winning percentage. The club has had a sub .400 winning % in a season 15 times - 6 of them on Avila's watch (including this year).

Earlier this week, the boo-birds came out at Comerica Park. Fans booed Javier Baez over his struggles at the plate. And then on Miggy Day, it was Chris Ilitch?s and Al Avila?s turn, with the GM receiving the majority of the feedback.

Is booing your team, not the opponent, something that should be done? Is the paying fan entitled or is it rude and disrespectful? Does it help, motivate or hurt the person receiving the negative attention?

Are there better ways of showing displeasure?

What do you think?

Is it appropriate for fans to boo members of their own team?

1. Yes

2. No

Over the past 2 weeks, there have been a number of national articles (and radio shows) published that evaluate the Tigers? rebuild. All critical, all pointing their fingers at GM Al Avila. All of them covered here at Totally Tigers this week.

Every piece has indicated that the Tigers have barely started to fill the many holes in their roster. That the free agents have all essentially been busts, rookies have been struggling and mid-tier players are under-performing.
Some of them indicated that next year?s roster will need even more work given that the level of talent seen this year is not viable enough to stay.

In summary, they believe the Tigers will be slipping backwards in their rebuild. More positional holes will be created next year in contrast to 2022.

So the question now to ask is which of these players will actually be part of the rebuild? Which ones deserve to stay? Which ones will become the nucleus of a competitive team?

And that is today?s topic.

Over the past 2 weeks, multiple articles and radio shows have gone public with their analyses of the Tigers? rebuild. All of them have been critical of the process and the GM in charge of it.

Topics addressed included the lack of progress in prospect development, questionable roster building and poor choices in the signing of free agents.

Despite ownership spending almost half a billion dollars in added payroll just this year, the Tigers are having a worse season and on pace to lose 100 games again. The team is in their (official) 6th year of rebuilding.

We must acknowledge that the team has experienced significant injuries which has played a part in their poor performance. However, more than half of the current lineup has been significantly under-performing to the point where the team is on a pace to score the fewest runs in their entire history dating back to 1901.

On the other hand, we should also note that rebuilding is not a short process but can take years, depending upon the owner, GM and available resources.

And considering, that just hours ago, Chris Ilitch gave his ?all is well? speech about the Tigers. We will save that event, as well as all conversations about the owner, for discussion on Tuesday.

Where do you see this rebuild heading? Are the Tigers actually progressing towards becoming competitive or have they stalled?

And what about their GM, Al Avila? Is he the right person to be in charge of the rebuilding process?
That is today?s question and poll.

Is Al Avila the right GM to oversee the Tigers' rebuild?

1. Yes, give him more time.

2. No, we need a new GM now.

3. Not sure.
