That's a lot of $$$ for one year for a dude with a recent injury history, but sure felt like it had to be done with the lack of options out there.

I agree. Lions were backed into a corner on this one IMO. Nobody really on the roster to take over for Ansah and like you said, free agency is weak this year at the DE spot. Lions need another 1 or 2 DE's from the draft or FA. I like Zettel and Hyder but ZA needs to step up and play 16 games this yr. A full 16!!! Health is key...

It's a defensive line with the potential to be crushing... but you know how far potential gets you.

If the Lions were short on cap space I wouldn’t like the tag, but that’s not the case this year. There’s absolutely no downside to this move given the circumstances they’re in (poor FA market + positional need).

Only downside is if he goes out and has a fantastic year. Tag next year will be 21.5 million, less negotiation room for the lions.

It's likely they sign him to a more cap friendly deal before the season starts. I'd say 4 years/$60M with $25M or so guaranteed. Front load it so it's essentially a 2 year deal with vesting options based on performance.

3 reasons why tagging Ezekiel Ansah was the right move.
It wasn?t an easy decision, but it was the right one.

So the better idea is that he fails? Choices are he's fantastic - cost too much and becomes a FA or he's terrible - we don't negotiate a deal and he's a FA anyway. I'll take the fantastic year option.

Still think we should go dline heavy in the draft/FA and tell him to kick rocks next offseason

This was the right move. We still need a lot more D-line help. I hope Ziggy can stay healthy and earn a long term contract.

I don't think I said anything along the lines of is better to play poorly. Just pointing out the downside of tagging. You lose the power. Like with Suh, we had no cards to play because of the way we kept restructuring.

When the tag isn't an option, you hold less power.

That should be the plan. If they?re in the exact same position next off-season, where they need to tag or re-sign Ziggy, then Quinn screwed up. They should comfortably be able to say goodbye after next season, unless he plays out of this world.

Suh never wanted to be here tho. And he was too good at the time to just let him walk. Ansah is a bit different. Still a good player but has some injury history. If he fails to play well, you let him walk. If he plays well, then you reward him. Hopefully Quinn has done his due diligence and has had some sit downs with ZA. Really find out where his head is at and if he wants to be a Lion for life. This is a "prove it" yr for Ziggy now. Does he want it?? Let's find out...

2nd'd.

Maybe have an impact in more than 4 games this year.
It'll never show up in the stats, but he did affect games with taking double teams and still getting pressure on the QB. He also sweets the edge nicely against the run. The bigger problem is the lack of complimenting peices to take advantage of their 1 on 1 matchups.

I agree he needs to play better, but to say he had no impact on the game if he didn't get a sack is just beyond ignorant.
