The Tigers are now 10.5 games back of the first place Royals and 4.5 games back of the last wild card spot….and only 1 game ahead of the 4th place Indians. We are actually closer to last place in the entire AL (3.5 games) than we are to the last wild card spot.
This 4 game series could be the final nail in this season’s coffin. This is the first time the Tigers have been below .500 since we started the 2013 season 1-2 and the first time they’ve been under .500 in the second half of the season since Oct 2, 2010. Tigers are 23-25 at home and the Mariners are 22-23 on the road. The Mariners have the worst winning percentage in the AL. They are 11-6 at Comerica since 2010. The Tigers get to avoid Felix Hernandez again.
“Big Pasta” is 4-2 with a 3.12 era in 8 starts at home this year but he’s pretty much been atrocious since the death of his father at the end of May. He’s given up at least 5 earned runs in his last 5 starts and his season era has climbed 1.95 from those 5 games. However, his lone win in those 5 games came against Seattle on July 6th. The Tigers won that game 12-5. His last start against Minnesota was his shortest outing of the season lasting just 2.1 innings. He has a 10.54 era in his 3 July starts.
Haap will be making his 2nd consecutive starts against the Tigers. He faced the Tigers back on July 8th and got a no decision after lasting just 4 innings and allowing 7 hits and 4 runs. He has a 2-3 record and 5.59 era in 9 road starts this season. Haap is 1-4 with a 5.93 era in his last 6 starts.
Current Tigers are hitting .267 (16 for 60) with 5 doubles and 1 home run against Haap. Marte is 2-2 with a home run. Castellanos is 3 for 4 and Cespedes is 3 for 16. The Tigers hit 9 home runs in the 3 games series against the Mariners earlier this month.
The Mariners are batting .207 (16 for 54) with 4 doubles and 2 home runs against Simon. Cano is 4 for 9 and Cruz and Morrison each have homered of him. The Mariners are last in the AL in batting average (.235) and OBP (.295) and have scored the 2nd fewest runs.
Castellanos is listed as day to day with a black eye and left cheek contusion after fielding an Adam Jones ground ball with his face yesterday. He also suffered a hyper-extended left finger in the process. Cespedes has a tight quad muscle. Both are starting tonight.
The weather forecast call for temps around the 80 degree mark and a slight chance of rain later in the game.
