Tampa Bay 1 Detroit 0 Final Game # 5

Time to start shopping guys and rebuild. Our best players got completely and utterly outplayed by the Lightning top players in this series. Three years in a row we've been bounced in round one, and I'm not so sure we even make the playoffs next season.

Zetterberg is a shell of himself and Datsyuk is gone. We have nobody ready to replace them either. Larkin looks to be the real deal but he can only do so much. The dline is a mess.

Holland better work some magic!!

It's Holland that placed the team in this state. Old guys with bad contracts; Abdelkader's millstone deal, terrible trades for "veterans" (Legwand, Cole); bad FA signings (Weiss, Samuelsson, Tootoo, Coliaccovio, (sp) That Sweedsich Guy... Barnstorm (sp) Richards), so I think the magic act is Smoke and Mirrors.

That's definitely a fair point. I know wings fans are longing for Yzerman to return to the organization to take over, but I'm not sure how plausible that scenario really is.

Not at all. But I want Yzerman to take Pavel's spot next season. But truth, we need a star. Highest scorer, 50 points and most goals 23? That's ridiculous.

I agree. A star on the blue line would also be welcome. Someone who can help jump start the offense from the back end like how Lidstrom or Rafalski used to do.

That defense corps is in shambles. Kronwall might be the worst one of the bunch. His game has fallen off a cliff. Hopefully he does the team a favor and retires. Ericsson is useless and on a ridiculous deal paying him like a legit shutdown guy. Green was given a contract like he's a top two blueliner. In reality, he's a power play specialist who isn't even that good at that and is useless everywhere else. Kyle Quincey is on a 4+ mil deal that is thankfully over. Although that might just free up money for Holland to overpay yet another useless defenseman. The only guy worth anything is Dekeyser and he's only mediocre. Marchenko and Smith are ok but below average. Just a terrible group.

And then you think about the fact that this team couldn't score goals and realize they have a lot of problems all over the place.

This isn't like last year when I thought they were unlucky to lose in the first round. Kronwall was still good, Zetterberg wasn't yet a total shell of himself. The secondary scorers were largley better. Mrazek was playing better. There was not much positive to take from this year.

Normally I just give up in other playoff hockey games after wings bow out but I wanted to watch other teams and it amazes me the Wings made the playoffs. Other teams are so much bigger and faster and better then us. We will be lucky to make the playoffs next year as we need a total overhaul. I wish hank, kronwall, and erikson would retire with Pavel to force Holland to do something.

Holland has made the wrong decision with Franzen, Hurdler, Hossa, Fippula, and I am sure some others. Now granted he has got us in the playoffs 25 years running and is 4-2 in cup finals, and drafted as well as can be expected from our draft positions .
The way he is doing business now it just is not working we seem to really hold on to Prospect too long in Grand Rapids. His free agent signs other the Hossa for a year has not been stellar. He way over pays for players. Gotta try something else. I say reboot and go young.

I always remember the Wings being so fast. That was their advantage.

They have some really fast players now, they just can't shoot. Helm had so many chances and couldn't score.

Yeah other NHL teams just seem so much faster than us and bigger and can score.

We just need to find a goalie who is 6'8". They don't even need that much skill, just be big enough to block the entire opening. Like Ben Bishop.

who is Barnstrom?

This is what average or below-average teams do in all sports. They sign on aging veterans to fill in roster-holes. Then after spending all the millions of dollars on older guys who didn't produce, everybody says... "why didn't we win?" Weiss and Richards come to mind. Weiss was hurt for a long time, right? Having several players in their prime who know how to work together is much better than signing one aging star from some other team. It's like a $1,000,000 band-aid.
